My puppy ate a pee pad. Now he's vomiting bile & has diarrhea. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 months and 3 days old | 25 lbs

My 5 month old puppy ate an entire pee pad 2 days ago. He’s been acting normal as well as eating and pooping normally. This morning, however, he through up yellow bile 2-3 times. He had a normal poop and then minutes later had to poop 2 more times and it was softer poop, almost diarrhea. I haven’t noticed any traces of the pee pad in his Poo over the last couple of days. Could it be stuck somewhere in his intestines? It doesn’t seem like there’s a blockage. Should we be worried?

It is very possible, and I would be worried if he's now having vomiting and diarrhea, as that may indicate a partial blockage (where some but not all stool is able to properly pass). If his symptoms continue, or none of the pee pad is passing, I would schedule a vet visit immediately to check for foreign body.

Hi there. If you aren't able to take Luke in to your vet's office, then I'm afraid all you can do at home is monitor him for any problems. He may vomit up the piece of pee pad on his own, or it may pass through his system without causing any issues.

The main thing to be concerned about is the possibility that it could get stuck in his intestines and cause a blockage. Symptoms of this problem would include repeated episodes of vomiting, not wanting to eat, acting lethargic, and not having bowel movements. If he develops any of these symptoms, then I'm afraid there is no other option besides taking him to see a vet urgently, as he may need emergency surgery to remove the obstruction. As long as he is acting normal, you shouldn't need to worry. You can monitor his stool for the next few days to see if the pad passes.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Kobu chewed up and ingested pieces of a wee-wee pad then he is at risk for that material to become stuck. If you made him vomit, did he vomit up ALL the pieces that were missing? If he didn't vomit up pieces then hopefully he will pass them in his stool. I would feed him small amounts of water and a bland diet as small frequent meals for several days. If he refuses to eat, starts vomiting and is lethargic he needs to be seen ASAP by a Veterinarian. They will need to take X-rays to make sure he doesn't need surgery to remove the pad pieces. I hope this helps and I wish you and Kobu the best!

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have a naughty boy on your hands. At this point, it sounds like he isn't currently having symptoms. If he stops eating or starts vomiting, you will want to seek veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are some dogs that are repeat offenders and continue to get themselves into trouble. If not already, he may need to be crated when alone, with nothing but a metal water bowl in the crate with him. I hope it makes it through this and stays out of trouble for a while.

Yes, if your puppy has been vomiting after eating abnormal material, she should absolutely be seen by a veterinarian. Pads can potentially cause obstruction of her stomach or intestines. She should be evaluated and have radiographs performed to rule out an obstruction of her gastrointestinal tract, ASAP.

Poor Draco! If you think he may have ingested a pee pad and he is now vomiting, I would be concerned about a possible intestinal blockage. If this is the problem, he will need emergency surgery to remove the obstruction - so I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic tonight for an exam. The veterinarian there can palpate his abdomen and take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem, and will advise you on what kind of treatment is needed depending on what is found.

Also, please monitor him at home for the next 2-3 days for signs of lethargy, abdominal pain, lack of stools, vomiting as these symptoms are common in gastrointestinal obstruction. If you notice any of the signs, you should take Iggy to your local vets right away.

The symptoms of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, small stools or no stools at all. If Sassy ate the incontinence pad a few days ago and she has not developed signs of anorexia and vomiting, most likely she does not have a blockage. If the only worrying sign at the moment is abnormal stool appearance, you should try bland diet for 2-3 days. However, if Sassy looks unwell or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets right away.

My dog ate a pee pad. What should I do if he swallowed part of it?

That's a tough one. Simba is so tiny, so a palm size sheet of plastic could possibly cause an obstruction or could pass through in the stool. Your options are to wait and hope it passes, but take him to the vet if he starts vomiting or having a decreased appetite or energy level for x-rays and possible emergency surgery. OR, you take him to an emergency clinic now that has an endoscope and see if they can remove it (which would still require general anesthesia and may not be successful because the plastic may just fall apart when they try to pull it out). There's not a clear right answer here because their are risks with both options. I'd give him a 50-70% chance of passing it on his own. I wish I could give you a more definite answer, but I hope that helps you decide how you want to proceed.
