Why is my puppy's stool watery after new food and eating paper?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 27 days old

My two month old shih tzu puppy had loose motion twice. Along with stool there was also water present in the stool. He recently started having puppy food and also ate a piece of paper. How should i take care of him?

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Puppies frequently acquire roundworms from their mother or environment. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity.
Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Blood in the stools in a puppy usually is caused by intestinal worms or infections. Please, take Rex to your local vets to check him over. He may just need worming medication and a few days of antibiotics, but your vet also may want to test him for parvovirosis, a nasty viral infection that attacks mainly puppies.

I don't think I would be concerned about this. The stool wouldn't be necessarily classified as diarrhea at this stage, just "soft".

I suggest you just monitor it for now. If it persists in being this consistency or it progresses to a more watery diarrhea then you may want to have him checked by your vet. Internal parasites (worms) is the number one reason for puppies to have diarrhea/soft stools.

Hopefully you have already had Knox to get his first set of vaccines......he should have been dewormed at that time and he should continue to get dewormed at every vaccination visit.

Yes. Watery stool in a puppy is greatly concerning. I would bring your puppy to a vet ASAP as it could be a deadly virus that is best chance ormf survival is early intervention. Try getting solid food in, a high quality canned puppy food. At this age you can start solids. Also deworm your little one. But mainly get it to a vet asap.

Why is my 2-month-old puppy's poop yellow and watery?

Poor Chaw! Unfortunately it's impossible to know the cause of the diarrhea by looks alone. The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including a change in diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even parvovirus. Chaw is very small and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. Small puppies can become very sick very fast and so need aggressive, early intervention. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppy. Diet and parasites are the most common causes of loose stool in young puppies. If his stool is clear of any parasitic, bacterial or viral infection, then I would consider a new diet. I would consider a sensitive stomach formula such as Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Gradually transition to the new food over 5 or so days. If this does not help within 2 weeks, then you may want to consider a prescription low fat and highly digestible diet from his veterinarian. Why is my new 5-month-old puppy having diarrhea and accidents?

We can have diarrhea due to stress (of a move to new home) or diet changes, however in young dogs we also worry about intestinal parasites (both worms and Protozoa that aren't killed by deworming) and in some cases depending on vaccine status parvovirus. For this reason it is best to have your pup checked at the vet and bring a stool sample for them to test. Until then you can pick up a probiotic for dogs at the vet or pet store and try feeding plain cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day or two.

What causes watery yellow or red stool in dogs? When to worry?

Hi there. I'm sorry that Hachi is having this problem. There are quite a few different things that can cause watery diarrhea like this in puppies, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him and run some tests. Some common possibilities would include intestinal parasites, an intestinal infection of some kind, parvo (if he isn't fully vaccinated), or ingestion of something toxic. If Hachi is eating and drinking normally and still active and playful, you could try deworming him with a broad-spectrum dewormer such as Panacur or Strongid, and feeding a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to see if his stool returns to normal. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if he has any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then he needs to see a vet right away as these are generally signs of a more serious problem.

My puppy has inconsistent poop and is vomiting kibble. Should I worry?

Poor Aiko! Some of the most common causes for soft stools in puppies are GI parasites, the addition of new foods or treats without a transition period, and stress. The fact that the stools are sometimes firm makes me a bit less concerned that this is a more serious cause, but we should investigate what the problem may be. Firstly, I would recommend having a stool sample submitted to your vet to look for parasites. Vomiting and loose stools can sometimes be a sign of gastrointestinal parasites. Secondly, Aiko should be eating a well-balanced puppy diet. New treats and foods should be slowly added to his diet. Avoid items with high fat as this sometimes causes tummy upset. Make sure he isn't eating things he shouldn't be. Puppies have pretty sensitive stomachs. Excessive stress and/or exercise can sometimes cause loose stools too. For today, withhold any treats so his tummy can settle. Offer him his next meal and see if he is still vomiting. If so, you should call your vet. Hopefully, this problem can be resolved soon!
