Is it safe to put a bed in my puppy's crate, especially if they chew?

If that doesn't work or isn't possible I think it is fine and not cruel to crate him at night. He should be sleeping anyway and it will also keep HIM and your stuff safe. Good luck!

I understand how frustrating it can be to get a dog comfortable in a kennel. There are a number of reasons that it is beneficial to get a dog comfortable being in a kennel, so I do think it is worth continuing to try. If Jasper needs to be kept quiet after surgery or for any other reason, we certainly want him to be comfortable in the kennel. For now, you might consider feeding him his meals in the kennel (without closing him in it). The goal would be for him to run into the kennel excited for food and associate it only with feeding. I am attaching a handout below that discusses reasons to have a dog sleep in a crate instead of a bed. You will have to make the best decision for your house as far as that goes, but you could also consider having a dog bed for Jasper to sleep in as an alternative. Yes, it is safe for him to sleep on this bedding. Once he is through his chewing and destructive phase, he can have a normal bed. You wan to be sure to keep him safe and remove any bedding he wants to tear up so that he does not get an intestinal blockage. I hope this helps.

I would crate him at night since you cannot watch him and he is so young. Once you know that you can completely trust him (potty and getting into stuff) then I would say you can let him out of the carte and sleep with you. A leash would not be recommended overnight or without supervision since it poses a risk of strangulation. It will likely urinate on your bed if you don't get up to take it outside. There is also a risk that you may injure the pup if you roll onto it while you are asleep. Use a large box or gate off a section of the room for him/her to sleep until you get an appropriately sized crate. It only needs to be big enough for the pup to stand, turn around and lie down. A pup shouldn't be crated for extended periods of time anyway.

Chewing is very normal for puppies but if he eats his bed, he could end up with an intestinal blockage which requires surgery or it could be fatal. Some puppies can have it at night. Some can't. Some beds are also more chew resistant than others. I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jasper is very young and likely lonely. Barking in the crate at 7 weeks is very normal. You can try putting a blanket over the crate to create a "den-like" environment. If he doesn't chew up toys you can place a large stuffed animal for his to snuggle up with. Still try to hold your ground and ignore him. You can also consider putting the crate in another room and everyone closes their bedroom doors until he is fully crate trained.
