Why does my puppy whine and bark in his crate at night?

It can be hard for a 7-week-old puppy to be comfortable sleeping by himself in a crate, as normally puppies this age would still be sleeping all snuggled up with their mother and littermates. I'm not sure where Jasper's crate is in your home, but I always recommend putting it in the bedroom right beside your bed at first - you can move it later on if you want to, once he's a bit older and sleeping through the night without any problems. This way, he's much less likely to whine and cry because he knows you're right beside him. If he does fuss a bit, you can talk softly to him and rest your hand on top of the crate for him to sniff. For small puppies, if needed, you can even get a soft-sided pet carrier and have him sleep in this on the bed at first. You can gradually transition him to the floor once he's comfortable and no longer crying at night.

This is not unusual behavior. Most puppies will outgrow this behavior but it will take time. Try to make the crate a positive place. Feed him in the crate only. Hide treats in the crate that he can discover. About 30 minutes before bed, play with him to make him more tired. Most pets will eventually come to like their crate and think of it as their own room but this generally will take a few weeks. Hang in there and best of luck.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This would be considered some type of anxiety which you could say it is separation anxiety specifically. This is not uncommon actually. I would recommend you discourage this behavior as much as possible. You can try doing positive reinforcement which basically means to praise and reward him with treats when he does the desired behavior which is staying quiet when locked in cage. Persistence is really the key to success. Eventually they can do great. Good luck!

When puppies are as young as Q, it can be hard for them to be separated from the mom and the litter (in general, puppies should stay with their mom/litter until 8 weeks old). Q is still going to wake up a lot (think about human infants). Get a sound machine that has a heart beat track. Place a large stuffed animal in the crate and put the machine behind it. Make sure the puppy is not going to chew up anything or swallow anything. Make sure the area is warm. Think comfort! As Q gets older, the waking up at night will decrease. When Q wakes up, he will need to be taken out to potty. I hope this helps!

This is definitely a difficult situation, because you have a dog (with the mindset of a puppy) that has a normal amount of energy for his age and seems to view the crate as a negative place to be. The crate should be a place that the pup likes to go to, so there is a great deal of training that will be required to get him to associate the crate with good thoughts (like treats). Also, the crate should not be overused. If a dog is spending more than 8 hours a day in a crate, then there's a good chance that they will eventually go stir-crazy. The other thing that needs to be addressed is Ollie's energy. The best way to release this pent-up energy is regular exercise. In his case, it may be best to have exercise where he is running - like when playing fetch at a dog park. I recommend starting two hours of this (AM and PM) to start with. He may need more. Working seven days a week and raising young kids must make free-time for training and exercise very difficult. If you are able to hire help (i.e. a dog walker, or trainer), then this may be your best option. If it is not possible for the dog to get adequate exercise and training, then the only other option I can think of is a consult with a veterinarian, or a veterinary behaviorist. Perhaps (and without being there, I can't tell for sure) Loki keeps crying because he gets your attention. You do not need to stay with him, nor does he need something to keep him occupied at night. He needs to learn that nighttime is for sleeping. Once you are sure that all of his needs have been attended to, put him in his crate and walk away . . . and stay away! Do not go back, yell, try to soothe, etc. Once he realizes that his noise won't get the desired result, he'll stop. However, he may get worse temporarily. This does not mean that the tactic isn't working. On the contrary, it means that what he was doing before no longer gets the desired result, so he's ramping up the behavior in the hopes that more will be better. Stand your ground! He will eventually learn for himself that nothing is going to work, so he may as well go to sleep.

All of this behavior you are describing is completely normal for a young puppy. Jack has a lot of new surroundings to get used to and that will take time. He should start to learn his name in about 2-3 weeks. It will probably take about that long for him to get used to being in the crate at night as well. Remember, he has been used to being with his mom and litter mates up until this point so he is not accustomed to being alone. Even though he is still very young, now is a great time to start some basic training commands with him. This will help better cement your relationship and help him understand that you are the one in charge. Use lots of treats to reward him when he does what you ask. To help him learn his name more quickly, give him a treat every time he looks your way when you say his name and try to avoid yelling his name when he is being scolded (for example instead of saying 'Jack, no!', just say 'No!').
