Should my 9-week-old puppy sleep in his crate or in my bed at night?

That all depends on the puppy. Crating tends to be safer because the puppy cannot get into potential harmful things. It also tends to help with house breaking. A leash would not be recommended overnight or without supervision since it poses a risk of strangulation. It will likely urinate on your bed if you don't get up to take it outside. There is also a risk that you may injure the pup if you roll onto it while you are asleep. Use a large box or gate off a section of the room for him/her to sleep until you get an appropriately sized crate. It only needs to be big enough for the pup to stand, turn around and lie down. A pup shouldn't be crated for extended periods of time anyway.

I always recommend going with your gut but being open to modifying your plan based on the puppies personality. When I got my rescue dog at 9 months, my plan was to crate him downstairs but he barked and I couldn't sleep. So I brought him upstairs and he has slept on a dog bed on the floor ever since. I think you should list out what is acceptable and what isn't (allowed on the bed/furniture or isn't, crated or not crated) and then make that the goal and stick to it. Whether you have the crate in your room temporarily and then move it somewhere else can depend on how needy Samson is in the beginning. Are you willing to let him "cry it out" or not. I am a fan of trying to set up a routine early so they get used to that. He will be needy the first several days but then should start to adjust and you can get stricter. Congratulations on your new puppy! I love his name! I see no problem with moving his crate to your room when you go to bed as long as he is remaining in the crate when he sleeps to avoid accidents. It is really a family decision on when to actually test the waters with this one. I always say if they can hold it for 8 hours (about 7 months of age) then give it a try. I would leave the cage as an option for Korbyn though. The cage is supposed to feel like a safe place so still giving them access to it is a good idea. YEs I would definitely crate him overnight, for everyones safety! It also rpovides a sense of boundaries for him that when you ask him to be quiet and go to bed it is not an invitation to go play and also helps reduce the risk of separation anxiety developing should you need to go away for a night!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, personally I think you can. That is part of training. As long as you can sleep that is what I would do if he was mine. But since he is only 6 weeks old he may not be able to hold it all night. So set your alarm to get up twice overnight to take him out and to check on him. If he starts chewing up the blankets or pee pads then you will have to take them out. Part of house training is getting up overnight until they can hold it that long. Most people remove the water before bedtime to prevent urinating overnight. I wish you the best!
