My dog tears beds. Is sleeping on a blanket safe for his joints?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Beds are fine in crates as long as they are not chewed up and/or pieces aren’t swallowed that would cause an obstruction. If Jasper chews the bed then he shouldn’t have a bed in his crate. I hope this helps!

Chewing is very normal for puppies but if he eats his bed, he could end up with an intestinal blockage which requires surgery or it could be fatal. Some puppies can have it at night. Some can't. Some beds are also more chew resistant than others. I hope this helps.

This could possibly cause gastrointestinal upset and blockage depending on the size of the pieces ingested. I would recommend to try to ignore and do not reinforce this behaviour by saying NO! or giving him any attention and try to give him another command (like sit or go to bed) and reinforce it. Make sure there are no bed sheets around could be useful as well.

Unfortunately, this is one of these situations that really stinks. Yes, of course you want Moose to be comfortable, but you also don't want him to be in surgery the next day having blankets removed from his intestines! If it were my dog, I simply wouldn't risk it. I would maybe try to put something very thin in there, like a bed sheet, and see if he still tries to destroy that. Some dog don't like how it smell either unfortunately, so it may not be the most enjoyable experience for Moose. The safest best would be to leave the crate empty. My dogs regularly sleep on the cold, hard floor in my house voluntarily and seem quite comfortable. I wouldn't fret over this issue too much.

I have experienced it with my dogs and I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now. Some dogs are just very destructive when it comes to toys, beds, and other items in the house. Maybe it's just boredom, lack of environmental enrichment, etc. I would advise more walks, more exercise, etc to see if the behavior continues. Good luck

It's perfectly fine for Toby to sleep on the bare floor if he wants to - many dogs prefer this to dog beds or blankets, especially when the weather is hot or if they have long hair. This will not cause any problems at all :)
