My puppy ate a thistle plant and is hacking. Should I be concerned?

The toxic components in tulips is concentrated in the bulb but is also present (in less concentrated amounts) in the other parts of the plant as well. I think Rocky will be fine but symptoms you would see would be associated with irritation of the mouth and esophagus: drooling and maybe vomiting. If you didn't do so already, flush out his mouth really well. If vomiting occurs I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rocky the best!

There could be many things that are causing this in Loki. Less likely a foreign body especially since he bounces back right after vomiting. It can be viral related or just a gastrointestinal upset. We always are concerned about Parvo in an unvaccinated puppy since he is only 9 weeks but this is less likely if he is energetic and has no diarrhea. He can always have intestinal parasites especially in a young puppy. I would recommend a stool check, deworming, a bland diet and an antacid as long as everything else is ok. Fortunately most cacti are not toxic but they can cause stomach and intestinal irritation leading to vomiting and diarrhea. I would with hold water for 6 hours then restart with sips of water frequently. I would fast for 12 hours and if there is not vomiting during the fast or with the small amounts of water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals for a few days. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If the vomiting is excessive or he won't eat I'd have your Vet examine him. Have a great weekend!

However, there could be issues with the spines of the cactus causing irritation or even perforation of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines if they are a substantial size. Since you are describing a small cactus, it seems unlikely that Hunny will experience any significant issues associated with this ingestion. At this point, make sure that she is eating, drinking, and acting normally without any coughing, gagging, or vomiting. I am so sorry about Zelda’s cough. It is possible a piece of bark has become lodged in her throat, or that the chewing merely inflamed her throat causing a cough. I would monitor her closely for the next few hours, offer her only water and keep her calm. If the cough worsens, she seems in pain or distressed I would take her to the vet immediately. I would give it a few minutes to see if it settles down. But if he continues to drool or cough Lou may have a foreign body stuck in the back of his mouth or his throat, and I would recommend a veterinary visit today. If it seems to go away then it may have just been transient, or a small piece of grass or something he's able to dislodge on his own.
