My dog ate grass and is gagging/coughing. Could something be stuck?

I would give it a few minutes to see if it settles down. But if he continues to drool or cough Lou may have a foreign body stuck in the back of his mouth or his throat, and I would recommend a veterinary visit today. If it seems to go away then it may have just been transient, or a small piece of grass or something he's able to dislodge on his own. That must be very frustrating for you! It could be an esophageal issue and it may be further testing would be a good idea. I'd speak to her vet about doing an endoscope of her esophagus and stomach to try to diagnose what is causing her issue. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Auggie could have either some nausea or had something caught in his throat. Reasons a dog might vomit or retch (the gagging without producing anything) include eating something new/different, toxin, infection, organ disease, cancer, or other. If he’s just vomited once, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If Auggie has vomited several times, it’s time to head to the ER clinic. The veterinarian will do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays and/or bloodwork to help narrow down the cause of the vomiting. They can also treat the nausea and administer fluids for any dehydration that has occurred. Best wishes to you and Auggie!

You can try offering him some wet dog food formed into a meatball to see if this helps push anything in his throat along. If the gagging continues or you are ever worried about how well Biko is breathing, I recommend having Biko seen by a veterinarian for an exam. Your vet may recommend chest x-rays to see if Biko has any primary lung issues or reasons for the gagging. I hope this is helpful!

Since this has been going on since yesterday I suggest getting her in to see your vet or at the very least giving them a call and describing the situation. One of those pieces of grass could be lodged at the back of her throat, making her gag. Constant nausea and coughing is tiring and could explain her lack of energy, but it is concerning that she hasn't stopped trying to cough something up.

If the age you put in, 20, is really correct I would say that you should have her evaluated for cardiorespiratory disease. Mitral valve disease in small dogs is extremely common particularly at an older age. Coughing is often the first sign of heart disease that we see. Another structural issue that occurs in smaller breed dogs is called a collapsing trachea. A chest x-ray should be considered strongly regardless of the veterinarian's physical exam findings. The consumption of grass is often associated with GI upset or nutritional deficiencies. Depending on what the condition is, medications that might be considered are bronchodilators, antibiotics, steroids, and diuretics. More information will be required however before commencing any therapy. Hope this helps.
