My puppy ate my dog's antibiotic. Will it hurt him? What should I do?

Oh no, that was naughty of Baxter! He took about five times the recommended dose of ampicillin. This will likely cause a reaction in the form of vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea, but more serious effects such as tremors or seizures. If you see tremors or seizures, Baxter will have to see a vet immediately. Should you see vomiting and diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

The amount of antibiotic he ingested is higher than typically used so he may experience some gastrointestinal issues but it should not be toxic. You could give him a probiotic for a few days (Proviable or Fortiflora) and monitor for any abnormal signs. If you notice anything abnormal then he should be examined by a vet for treatment.

Most likely this amount of amoxicillin is not going to cause Theodore any harm. However any medication can cause GI irritation like vomiting and diarrhea. IF you notice any diarrhea I would recommend trying a bland diet for 12-24 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. Antibiotics usually have large dose ranges and toxic dosages tend to be very high. Im not sure which antibiotic you had, but I imagine that the lab will be absoloutely fine considering it is larger than the beagle. He may have a slightly upset tummy but otherwise should be fine. If you notice anything odd contact your vet tomorrow and get some more antibiotics for the other dog.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Boss will be fine, there is no need to take him to the vet. Doxycycline is used in dogs fairly often. At the dose he ingested there should not be any side effects at all.

I don't think that this is going to be a problem but it is possible that Mini will develop some stomach/intestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping from the ingestion. If she ingested 1/2 of the tube, that's about 100-150 mg of the antibiotic which is well within the range for her normal dose if she was put on a similar antibiotic from your vet. I would monitor her and if signs develop and don't resolve, I would at least call your veterinarian and see what they advise. They may want to see her and then advise some treatment for her signs if they develop and don't resolve. Good luck with Mini.
