My dog ate human antibiotics. Is it harmful? What should I do now?

Most likely this amount of amoxicillin is not going to cause Theodore any harm. However any medication can cause GI irritation like vomiting and diarrhea. IF you notice any diarrhea I would recommend trying a bland diet for 12-24 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. If this does not help than Theodore should go see a vet for medications to resolve the GI upset. Hope that helps . thanks for using pet coach

Oh no, that was naughty of Baxter! He took about five times the recommended dose of ampicillin. This will likely cause a reaction in the form of vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea, but more serious effects such as tremors or seizures. If you see tremors or seizures, Baxter will have to see a vet immediately. Should you see vomiting and diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

Antibiotics usually have large dose ranges and toxic dosages tend to be very high. Im not sure which antibiotic you had, but I imagine that the lab will be absoloutely fine considering it is larger than the beagle. He may have a slightly upset tummy but otherwise should be fine. If you notice anything odd contact your vet tomorrow and get some more antibiotics for the other dog.

Hello. This is twice the normal dude for him, but this is a very safe antibiotic with very low chance of toxicity. I doubt that Skipper will suffer any side effects, but to guard against nausea...try to feed him a little to reduce the chance that he could vomit . Many different antibiotics are used for both humans and dogs, the only difference is the dose given. Antibiotics should not be given without the advice of your veterinarian. Inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate any underlying condition which could delay diagnosis.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Mini getting into this. I don't think that this is going to be a problem but it is possible that Mini will develop some stomach/intestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping from the ingestion. If she ingested 1/2 of the tube, that's about 100-150 mg of the antibiotic which is well within the range for her normal dose if she was put on a similar antibiotic from your vet. I would monitor her and if signs develop and don't resolve, I would at least call your veterinarian and see what they advise. They may want to see her and then advise some treatment for her signs if they develop and don't resolve. Good luck with Mini.
