My small dog ate cow antibiotic. What are the risks to her health?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My small dog (10 lbs.) chewed the end off of a partially used 10ml tube of cephapirin sodium for lactating cows. It is possible that she ingested at most half of the tube, maybe less. Could this cause any problems?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Mini getting into this. I don't think that this is going to be a problem but it is possible that Mini will develop some stomach/intestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping from the ingestion. If she ingested 1/2 of the tube, that's about 100-150 mg of the antibiotic which is well within the range for her normal dose if she was put on a similar antibiotic from your vet. I would monitor her and if signs develop and don't resolve, I would at least call your veterinarian and see what they advise. They may want to see her and then advise some treatment for her signs if they develop and don't resolve. Good luck with Mini.

My puppy ate my dog's antibiotic. Will it hurt him? What should I do?

Hello. This is twice the normal dude for him, but this is a very safe antibiotic with very low chance of toxicity. I doubt that Skipper will suffer any side effects, but to guard against nausea...try to feed him a little to reduce the chance that he could vomit . My dog ate human antibiotics. Is it harmful? What should I do now?

The amount of antibiotic he ingested is higher than typically used so he may experience some gastrointestinal issues but it should not be toxic. You could give him a probiotic for a few days (Proviable or Fortiflora) and monitor for any abnormal signs. If you notice anything abnormal then he should be examined by a vet for treatment.

My dog Milo might have eaten minocycline pills. Is it dangerous?

Minocycline is an antibiotic that can be used in dogs. If Milo did eat any, you may not see any reaction or you could see some GI upset if he ate more than the recommended dose. My large dog ate another dog's antibiotic pills. Is it an emergency?

Antibiotics usually have large dose ranges and toxic dosages tend to be very high. Im not sure which antibiotic you had, but I imagine that the lab will be absoloutely fine considering it is larger than the beagle. He may have a slightly upset tummy but otherwise should be fine. If you notice anything odd contact your vet tomorrow and get some more antibiotics for the other dog.

My small puppy ate adult dog's pills. Is it an overdose risk?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, If the ingestion was recent (in the last hour) then you can take PeeWee to a clinic to induce vomiting to try to get it out. Otherwise just monitor. It should be ok but you might see vomiting, diarrhea, GI upset overall. Any other abnormal activity then get PeeWee to a vet right away for supportive care. My puppy ate clindamycin. Is it harmful or will she be okay?

Hi there. It would help to know how much your puppy weighs. But in general, I would not expect to see any serious issues from a one-time dose of clindamycin, even if it's a relatively high dose for her size. You might see some mild GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea) for the next 24 hours or so, but otherwise she should be just fine.
