My dog ate doxycycline. Is it safe? Do I need to go to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting. I’m assuming both dogs are about the same weight. If so the doxycycline could cause vomiting or upset stomach but there would be no other major concerns. If one of your dogs is smaller you should repost your question. Be sure to let your vet know and to get a refill so the prescription can be finished.

A part from possible oesophageal inflammation, Prince should not experience any other side effect a part from nausea, vomiting, and possibly diarrhea. I would not be extremely worried and just monitor him at this stage. Should you notice any signs listed above, a check up would be needed.

This is unlikely to cause any issue but doxycycline can be quite irritant to the throat and gullet if it stays lodged without food to carry it down to the stomach. It should always be followed by eating a small amount of food or a drink as a precaution against this

The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Please, get in touch with your local vet to discuss the treatment as it sounds that the dose should be slightly adjusted.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Haus is having this issue. I would not be concerned about the water consumption increase. I have not heard of anyone saying that has happened with a dog on doxycycline but every animal is an individual and can affect them differently. Either way, the extra water will not harm him. If the diarrhea persists for more than 36 hours then I think a vet visit would be warranted as that can be a side effect of the medication. The extra dose probably caused the vomiting. Doxycycline does cause vomiting as a side effect. If the vomiting resolves, then I would not be concerned. If the vomiting persists, contact your veterinarian.
