My puppy ate a stick and cotton, then vomited. Should I be concerned?

Poor girl. Let her vomit. If she vomits up the particles well then that is a good thing. However if she tries to vomit and cannot produce anything, or if she continues to vomit liquids and refuses food, then this is concerning for a potential blockage and she should be taken to your vet right away. So monitor her for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of a blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), refusing food, few feces, +/- abdominal pain, and lethargy. If she doesn't have any of these symptoms and can keep her food down well, then she is likely to be just fine. However for the future you should try to keep these harmful things out of her reach, because puppies are very curious and will put almost anything in their mouths, not realizing how harmful they can be.

Well that was naughty of him. If the material is coming out that is a good sign. We get concerned about possible foreign body issues when we see vomiting (even water), decreased appetite, and lethargy. As long as he is still bouncing around, eating well and acting like his normal self, there is no need for concern. If he does start to have symptoms, then a vet visit is highly recommended. Just try to keep him away from things he can ingest and always monitor him when he is outside of his crate. If he continues to vomit than you should be worried and have him examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to look for signs of an obstruction. If the vomiting has resolved than just monitor him for additional signs.

I can certainly understand your concerns about Finn's stick ingestion, but the good news is that it sounds as though he's still doing very well at home. Stick ingestion is a bit of a tricky situation. Even if you had taken Finn to his vet immediately after he'd eaten the stick, your vet would likely have advised against inducing vomiting. The induction of vomiting of potentially sharp objects risks perforation of the esophagus, which is extremely dangerous. The only other ways to get the stick out are a) wait for it to pass or b) surgically remove it. At this point, the fact that Finn is doing well at home (namely eating, drinking, and acting normally without any vomiting or diarrhea) indicates that it's still more than reasonable to simply wait and give him more time to pass it. While I can't definitively tell you that surgery is absolutely not indicated without having examined Finn, it doesn't sound as though it's something that you need to urgently pursue by taking him to the vet. For the time being, I think it's reasonable to continue monitoring Finn closely at home. If you notice anything change, such as a loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, retching, gagging, or diarrhea, be sure to take him to see his vet right away. Otherwise, feeding him a bulkier diet, such as bread and rice, pumpkin, and boiled chicken may help him to pass the stick through his stool a bit more efficiently. As long as he is eating and drinking normally, I would not be concerned. If he begins to vomit or loses his appetite, then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him and perform some diagnostic testing such as x-rays to help rule out a foreign body obstruction from the plastic. Oh dear! It's common for puppies this age to eat things like this that they shouldn't, unfortunately. You're right that it's possible for pieces of the mask to get stuck in his intestines and cause an obstruction, but they may also pass through his system without any problems at all. As long as he is acting normal (eating and drinking fine, active and playful, no vomiting, and pooping regularly), there shouldn't be any reason for concern. If he stops eating, or begins to vomit or act lethargic, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for x-rays to see if he may have an obstruction - if so, surgery can be performed to remove the blockage at that time. But as long as he is not showing any symptoms, there is no need for any kind of treatment :)

If Toby has only thrown up 1 maybe 2 times but is still eating,drinking and playing normally I would continue to monitor his behavior . If at anytime he starts vomiting more, acting lethargic, having diarrhea or not eating I would recommend taking him to a vet as soon as possible. It is possible that Toby ate something he should not or even had a mild upset stomach that caused him to get sick. IF he is acting normally but continues to occasionally vomit I would recommend switching his dog food because sometimes vomiting can be secondary to a food allergy. I hope that helps
