My puppy on antibiotics is drinking less water. When to call vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 9 days old | 65 lbs

At what point should I call my vet about my puppies water intake? He is on day 3 of antibiotics for rhinitus/upper respiratory infection and also day 2 of a bland diet. He is scarfing down his food, peeing regularly, but drinking only a few tiny sips here and there throughout the day. Nothing compared to his usual. His energy level is lower, which my vet said was fine as long as he was eating and drinking. Now that he is drinking less I’m concerned. Do I take him in?

Dogs are pretty good at regulating their water intake. If he is eating normally, then I would suspect he is adequately hydrated. If the bland diet is moist food, there will also be increased water content in it.
