My dog has a UTI and won't drink water on antibiotics. What to do?

If that was the cause then she should start getting better in the next day or so. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck! Hello. No, this is not common with UTIs. Either her diagnosis needs to be reevaluated, or her antibiotics are affecting her. If she's completely refusing food and water and it's been more than a day, I would try to get her into your vet sooner or into the ER. You can check to see how dehydrated Aurora is by gently pinching and tenting the skin over her neck. If it seems "sticky" or is very slow to return back to normal, this is a sign of dehydration. If she's dehydrated in addition to her other symptoms and also is suffering from underlying health issues, I would have her seen right away.

Poor girl. This is concerning that she not only has a UTI but that the bacteria has now entered her bloodstream (sepsis) and is making her ill. Yes your vet will have to see her to get her urine tested first and then prescribe antibiotics to hopefully get her feeling better soon. You cannot get antibiotics prescirbed for your pet without first completing a physical exam. Other possible causes for this include: diabetes, cushing's disease aor even cancer unfortunately. This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Hopefully she returns to normal and there is no need for a veterinary visit. Have a great day!

I would not stop the antibiotics until the full course is given, however if she will take a treat, giving it with that, or even a little boiled chicken may help entice her to eat some without upsetting her stomach. If she is refusing any and all food at all, it is best to let the vet know as they may want to start other treatments such as an IV/injectable antibiotic or IV fluids to help get her feeling better.

Is she trying to urinate but can’t? If so this could be an emergency and she should be seen immediately. It is also possible that she is dehydrated and doesn’t have much urine to produce.
