Puppy not drinking water after homemade diet switch, is it normal?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Siena. In looking at the dog food you switched Siena to it has a high "hydration" content. This allows her to receive a large portion of the water that she needs directly thru the diet that you are feeding to her. This is most likely the cause of her decrease in water consumption. Not to worry about this. This is normal, especially if she is otherwise acting well. I also wanted to mention that there was a recall on this brand of food from last year. I do not know which specifica flavor of this food you are receiving, but just wanted to mention this so you check their website often and be in the know if any recalls happen with the flavor you are providing for Siena. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Wet food has a very high moisture content. So dogs eating this type of food drink less water than when eating kibble. If he is exercising less, this will cause him to drink less as well. As long as he is eating and acting normal, then you do not likely need to be concerned. You can always follow up with his veterinarian, but I suspect he is fine. I hope this information helps!

This is VERY normal. If you are adding water to her food then she likely doesn't need any additional water. Being only 2 pounds, she really only needs about 1/4-1/2 cup of water per day to maintain hydration.

She is very young, i am assuming her diet consists of puppy milk replacer and wet dog food, in that case it is normal she is not drinking water, once she starts eating dry dog food she will start drinking water.

Dogs are pretty good at regulating their water intake. If he is eating normally, then I would suspect he is adequately hydrated. If the bland diet is moist food, there will also be increased water content in it.

If the soft food is very wet he doesn't need to drink much water. You can put some water on your finger by the bowl to get him started or have a little bit of milk in the water so it tastes better. Canned food has a high water content, so it can be normal for dogs to stop drinking much water when they are eating canned food. You might want to talk to your vet about testing Sadie's urine specific gravity and urine pH after she's been on the food for a few weeks to make sure they are in the ideal range for a dog with bladder stones. If so you probably don't have to worry about encouraging her to drink more water.
