My dog on canned food won't drink water. Normal for bladder issues?

She is going to drink less on that bland diet because those foods hold a lot of moisture. She is getting liquid and water through the food so her intake is less. You can add chicken broth or extra water to the food to encourage her to get more if she is eating well.

If he is exercising less, this will cause him to drink less as well. As long as he is eating and acting normal, then you do not likely need to be concerned. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Siena. In looking at the dog food you switched Siena to it has a high "hydration" content. This allows her to receive a large portion of the water that she needs directly thru the diet that you are feeding to her. This is most likely the cause of her decrease in water consumption. Not to worry about this. This is normal, especially if she is otherwise acting well. I also wanted to mention that there was a recall on this brand of food from last year. I do not know which specifica flavor of this food you are receiving, but just wanted to mention this so you check their website often and be in the know if any recalls happen with the flavor you are providing for Siena. Dogs are pretty good at regulating their water intake. If he is eating normally, then I would suspect he is adequately hydrated. If the bland diet is moist food, there will also be increased water content in it.

She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. A good way to increase water consumption is to give canned food. That said, Nico may be taking enough for his needs on a regular basis. You can add a lot of water to the canned food to make it a gruel based diet. I do have a few suggestions on what may help her consume more water. First, you may want to invest in a waterfall or water movement type of water bowl. These types of watering devices can help mimic a running faucet and studies have shown that animals will drink more from this type of device. Second, you could perhaps change the water you are giving. So for instance, if you are giving your pet well water, you would switch to city water or filtered water. Or if you are giving city water, you may want to switch to filtered water for just a while to see if that helps drink more. I hope I have been of some help. Have a great day.
