New dog has mange, Ehrlichiosis. How to protect my other dog from it?

Is the mange currently being treated with an oral product such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or Credelio? Demodex mites are found on virtually all dogs, but it does take a suppressed immune system for them to overpopulate and cause an infection. If the mange is already being treated and your own dog is otherwise healthy, the risk *should* be fairly low. Congratulations on your new addition! Gia is certainly lucky to have been rescued. If the dogs have been together for a month, then your yorkie has certainly been exposed to anything contagious that Gia may have, so I would try to clarify with your vet the reason for the recommended separation. Hi there. I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling the puppy, and don't allow any close physical contact with your clothing, etc. if possible. Scabies mites do not survive very long off of the host, so there is likely not much risk of infecting your dogs by touching them when you get home - but if you want to be extra safe, you could take a shower and change your clothes before petting or snuggling with them. Alternatively, if your dogs are on an oral flea/tick medication like Nexgard or Bravecto, you shouldn't need to worry about sarcoptic mange at all because these meds will protect them against this.

She is probably fine to roam around the apartment after confining her for about 72 hours of the Revolution application. I would recommend you continue with Revolution dosing every 3 weeks for a few more treatments. These mites are very contagious to other dogs but since she has been treated, the house has been treated and the other dogs are on prevention they will probably not contract the mites.

It's difficult to say for certain, since eggs may continue to hatch and the new adult mites could be contagious. At this point it is probably unlikely that there are adults that would be contagious so if your other dog has been treated preventatively I would think it is safe for them to be together. To be safe it would probably be best for you to wear gloves until Waffles's treatment is complete.

I would keep them separate for now and wash your hands after handling each dog. She needs to rest as stress may make her worse. I’m not sure what type of sickness she has but contact them tomorrow and they should be able to get medication for you to give her at home. She will heal more quickly at your house than in a shelter environment. If your dog is healthy and vaccinated it should be able to fight off any infection the new dog may have. Nasal mites are usually killed pretty quickly with the treatment however, we are not actually 100% of their complete life cycle at this time. So, it is probably best to keep him away from other dogs until one week after his clinical signs resolve.
