My dog has mange. When can I stop wearing gloves and isolating her?

Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to other pets and even humans. The treatment can take as long as six weeks for your puppy to respond completely and, until then, I recommend limiting your exposure to her and quarantining her away from any other pets until she is recovered.

She is probably fine to roam around the apartment after confining her for about 72 hours of the Revolution application. I would recommend you continue with Revolution dosing every 3 weeks for a few more treatments. These mites are very contagious to other dogs but since she has been treated, the house has been treated and the other dogs are on prevention they will probably not contract the mites.

I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

Is the mange currently being treated with an oral product such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or Credelio? Demodex mites are found on virtually all dogs, but it does take a suppressed immune system for them to overpopulate and cause an infection. If the mange is already being treated and your own dog is otherwise healthy, the risk *should* be fairly low. Nasal mites are usually killed pretty quickly with the treatment however, we are not actually 100% of their complete life cycle at this time. So, it is probably best to keep him away from other dogs until one week after his clinical signs resolve.

The absolute best way to know is if you see resolution of skin lesions and also when there are no mites detected on a skin scrape/cytology. Mites can still be present on the skin, even when the skin looks great on the outside. This will cause people to stop treating presumptively, and this results in treatment failure as the mites will come back quickly. You must have 2 negative skin scrapes done 2 weeks apart, plus resolution of skin lesions, to determine if a pet can come off medication. I hope this helps!

Hi there. I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling the puppy, and don't allow any close physical contact with your clothing, etc. if possible. Scabies mites do not survive very long off of the host, so there is likely not much risk of infecting your dogs by touching them when you get home - but if you want to be extra safe, you could take a shower and change your clothes before petting or snuggling with them. Alternatively, if your dogs are on an oral flea/tick medication like Nexgard or Bravecto, you shouldn't need to worry about sarcoptic mange at all because these meds will protect them against this.
