Just adopted a sick dog. How do I prevent my other dog from getting sick?

I’m sorry to hear that your pups are sick! Most upper respiratory infections from the shelter are viral, but young newly adopted dogs are at greater risk for secondary bacterial infections Which is why they often get put on antibiotics. However, many otherwise healthy adult dogs will recover quickly without any antibiotics. I Ted to treat it like you would a cold in yourself. Fluids, Rest, and a little time as long as appetite is normal and acting fine otherwise . Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. As long as your other dogs are fully vaccinated against distemper, they cannot get it. Make sure they are up to date on their distemper vaccines before introducing Manila to them. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question. I recommend that your parent's dog is seen by a veterinarian. It is always a good idea to have an exam when a new pet is brought home. Hopefully this is just an adjustment period for her, but it is important to determine if she is ill or not. If she is healthy, then maybe playdates with your dog with help her to settle into her new home. I hope this information helps!

I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge. Is the mange currently being treated with an oral product such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or Credelio? Demodex mites are found on virtually all dogs, but it does take a suppressed immune system for them to overpopulate and cause an infection. If the mange is already being treated and your own dog is otherwise healthy, the risk *should* be fairly low. Coccidia is transmitted via the fecal oral route so if there any surfaces that are contaminated with your pup's feces, this should be washed thoroughly and other dogs should be kept away from it.
