Should I separate my new dog with demodectic mange from my other dog?

If the dogs have been together for a month, then your yorkie has certainly been exposed to anything contagious that Gia may have, so I would try to clarify with your vet the reason for the recommended separation. I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

Hi there. I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling the puppy, and don't allow any close physical contact with your clothing, etc. if possible. Scabies mites do not survive very long off of the host, so there is likely not much risk of infecting your dogs by touching them when you get home - but if you want to be extra safe, you could take a shower and change your clothes before petting or snuggling with them. Alternatively, if your dogs are on an oral flea/tick medication like Nexgard or Bravecto, you shouldn't need to worry about sarcoptic mange at all because these meds will protect them against this.

Very good information. Yes you are correct that topical shampoo with Benzoyl peroxide is a great addition to therapy to rid the mites. The next step would be to get her an oral treatment, which in my opinion the best and easiest way to treat Demodexx is to give her Bravecto or Nexgard. These are flea/tick preventatives, however they are also labeled for Demodexx treatment and can be given once very 1-2 months to treat Demodexx. The other way to treat Demodexx, which in my opinion is a lot more time consuming and costly, is daily Ivermectin 1%. Both these treatments will require a veterinary prescription first, so it is best to get Nu'u seen by a veterinarian if she hasn't already. It is also important to get repeat skin scrapes every 2-3 weeks during treatment to monitor her progression and also this helps you determine when she can go off her medication.

Mara needs the medications to treat the mites. Some dogs do need lifetime treatment. The good news is that many dogs will respond to the new oral flea and tick medications such as Nexgard and bravecto which may clear or keep demodex in check. Mara should also be spayed- demodex has a genetic component so she should not have puppies but beyond this each heat cycle stresses her immune system and makes an outbreak more likely. Grain free is not necessary, while it shouldn't hurt her it is a marketing gimmick by food companies and not based on medical research. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bruno! The good news is that Demodex isn't contagious to other dogs or people. Also it is super easy to treat now thanks to the new oral flea and tick medications. The once a month Nexgard or Simparica and the every 3 month Bravecto also kill demodex when prescribed at the normal frequency. Personally I wouldn't use any other medication as these are much safer. I would say it will likely take up to 3 months for Bruno to be cured but you will likely see improvement before then. I wish you and Bruno the best!

Prescription monthly Nexgard flea and tick preventative also kills mange and is approved for a 4 month old dog (monthly Simparica and Bravecto every 12 weeks also work off label to kill mange but are labeled for dogs 6 months and older). She can be just on monthly Nexgard without the ivermectin therapy but both are safe as well. I recommend inquiring with your vet about monthly Nexgard for Winter and seeing if she may have underlying allergies as well which can predispose dogs to getting mange. Prescription Apoquel pills or monthly Cytopoint allergy injections Injections are both very effective in treating itchiness from environmental allergies (typically characterized by paw licking, scratching, chronic anal gland issues, chronic ear infections).
