My puppy has mites: How long to confine & can other dogs get them?

Nasal mites are usually killed pretty quickly with the treatment however, we are not actually 100% of their complete life cycle at this time. So, it is probably best to keep him away from other dogs until one week after his clinical signs resolve.

I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

It's difficult to say for certain, since eggs may continue to hatch and the new adult mites could be contagious. At this point it is probably unlikely that there are adults that would be contagious so if your other dog has been treated preventatively I would think it is safe for them to be together. To be safe it would probably be best for you to wear gloves until Waffles's treatment is complete.

Treatment depends on if he has sarcoptic mange or demodex mange. Medications and shampoos can be administered at home for sarcoptic manage depending on the treatment used, but must be prescribed by a veterinarian before use. All animals in the house must be treated, and the home must be disinfected as well. Demodex mange can also be treated at home with medications from the veterinarian. Because sarcoptic mange is so itchy, anti-itch shampoos or medications such as anti-histamines may be recommended by the veterinarian to help relieve the itchiness. Dogs affected with sarcoptic mange must be isolated from other animals in the home. There are several different medications that can be used to treat sarcoptic mange. Ivermectin is a common medication, but it must be given only by a veterinarian. Selemectin (Revolution), Moxidectin (Advantage Multi), amitraz washes, and 2% lime sulpher washes can be used as well. Generalized demodex mange involves treating any underlying systemic illness, antibiotics for skin infection, amitraz dips, milbemycin, and ivermectin, which is given by the veterinarian. Ivermectin treatment has to been given for 90-120 days, and should be used for one month past resolution of symptoms. Amitraz dips should be given every two weeks for between six to 14 dips, and should continue for one month after mites are not found on skin scrapings.

Licking and swallowing Revolution can produce serious side effects therefore you should separate Nelson and Oscar until the skin is completely dry. It normally takes 2-3 hrs for Revolution to be fully absorbed by the skin so there is not need to separate them for longer than that.

I'm sorry to hear about your issue with Cheyletiella. They are a bothersome parasite to deal with! Apply Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments (use appropriate dose for your kittens' weight). You can use Frontline Plus as well if you feel you aren't getting the results you wanted at the dosage of Revolution stated above. Fontline Plus can be applied every 2 weeks at the correct dose based off body weight for this problem. You should also use a lime silver dip or topical flea product to clean the kittens. Diluted bleach 1 part bleach:9 parts water sprayed on all surfaces and allows to sit for 10 minutes before wiping clean should help. All bedding and toys should be washed in hot water or thrown away.
