Pregnant dog has eye discharge and is lethargic. Can she take meds?

I am so sorry to hear that Isabeau is experiencing the green discharge problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Her to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Isabeau to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. For example if a corneal ulcer is present in addition to an infection. This is an especially important point while Isabeau is pregnant, and vetroplolycin may not be the appropriate medication for the precise issue with her eyes or while she is pregnant. I would be very concerned about her, she appears very unwell and weak and this could put both her and pregnancy at risk. I would be afraid of a serious infection possibly from the mating ir a viral disease such as distemper. She needs urgent fluid therapy for rehydration and an ultrasound exam and blood tests to assess the health if the pups and also Indra

Congrats on the upcoming puppies! She could have a bacterial or yeast infection in her canal. She could also have ear irritation just from allergies and may not need that medicine. I would recommend to have your vet look at her ears to ensure her ear drums are intact as some ear meds can cause neurological problems if given when the ear drum isn't intact. Your vet will also be able to determine the cause of the ear irritation. Take the ear drops with you and they will be able to tell you if they will be a good medicine for the infection if there is one present. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, a uterine infection can become a common secondary issue with what you are describing. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Laila. Finally, the safety of using Azithromycin in nursing dogs has not been determined, so I would not recommend using it in her. It is never say to try to treat your dog yourself, as you could accidentally give a medication that is harmful to her or inappropriate to use. It’s possible that Boogie has conjunctivitis, an infection or an allergy that’s causing her signs. I don’t think it would be related to her recent pregnancy or puppies. I would recommend having your vet examine Boogie’s eyes to determine what is going on and to prescribe medications.

Its reasonable to give er a few days and see if her behavior starts to improve, as long as her appetite is normal, she's not having any vomiting or diarrhea, her breathing is normal, and she will get up and walk to greet you when you call her. If she won't get up on her own, or is she's showing any other symptoms, you need to take her to the vet. If it's just that she's more tired, etc, give her a few days.
