Why are my dog's eyes swollen and discharging after having puppies?

I highly recommend that you have Rocky evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to take a close look at the eye and recommend any treatments based on how it looks. Freckles could have a couple things going on. First she could have something simple called blepharitis which is inflammation of the eyelids. She could have a scratch on her eyes but she could also have something called Puppy Strangles. This is also known as juvenile cellulitis. This causes inflammation around the eyelids. The cause of this is unknown but can occur anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months of age. Treatment for this is a long course of steroids, sometimes topical medications and oral antibiotics. I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It looks as Boots is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take her to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Red or inflamed eyes and discharge can be indicative or irritation or infection, or a condition called dry eye. Shih Tzu's are unfortunately prone to many eye problems, just based on the conformation of their faces. Chloe may have an aberrant eyelash that could be irritating the cornea, or she could have a bacterial or viral infection affecting her eye. Dry eye is a condition characterized by inadequate tear production, so the eyes dry out and excessive mucoid discharge is produced to try to lubricate the eyes. If her clinical signs do not resolve in 24 hours, I recommend having Chloe seen by a veterinarian. They can perform an ocular exam to look closely for evidence of distichia (abnormal eyelashes), a cornea scratch or ulcer, infection, or decreased tear production. I hope this is helpful!
