Pomeranian eye discharge, watery, and pawing. When should I see a vet?

Hello. If this is a new symptom, or a worsening of an earlier condition, or if the discharge is associated with facial rubbing or pawing at the eyes, and there is any redness to the sclera ( whit part of the eye ) then you should have Molly examined by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Molly may have allergies, an infection or a condition called dry eye that all require a different treatment. It is best to know exactly what the problem is so that the correct treatment can be started. The sooner the better because if serious enough, some eye conditions can lead to serious pain & discomfort as well as loss of vision. I hope you can have her seen soon. I am so sorry to hear that Molly isn’t feeling well. Her non specific symptoms don’t give me much to go by, bit based on her age and breed I would worry about back pain, fever from many different causes, uterine infection if she is not spayed, kidney disease, and many other possibilities. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Alternatively she could be seen by an emergency veterinarian immediately. Poor guy. If the discharge is a yellow or green color and his sclera (white part of the eye) is red and irritated then he probably has an eye infection and is in need of topical antibiotics prescribed by your local veterinarian. This breed is also high risk for "Dry eye" (KCS-keratoconjunctivitis sicca) which will result in clear or white discharge initially, that can later turn to an infection. This condition is diagnosed with a simple tear production test through your vet and then Bear would need prescription medication (i.e. Cylclosporine) +/- artificial tears to treat this. If Bear has other symptoms (i.e. vomiting, decreased appetite, etc) and eye discharge, then this is probably a weepy eye that is secondary to another underlying condition. More information would be needed to know what other conditions may be the cause of his illness. So it is best to schedule an appointment for Bear so that you can get him properly diagnosed and treated for his current eye condition. The sclera looking purple is very concerning for severe irritation and the pawing may indicate that Tinky is in pain. Just like humans, pets can get many eye issues and it could range from an infection to glaucoma or even a tumor. I recommend to have Tinky examined today if possible. It's important to determine the underlying cause and to make her more comfortable quickly. Pawing at the eye is also bad since she could cause a scratch. She should wear an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent injury. Best of luck.

Unfortunately no, there isn't anything you can do at home to treat Molly's swollen eye, she has to see a vet. Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take her into a vet as soon as possible. Best of luck.

Poor Pippa! I definitely see the discharge in the inner corner of her eye, and a little bit of redness. You should definitely have her examined by a vet as soon as possible, because eye issues can turn into emergencies very quickly. The discharge can be due to conjunctivitis, a foreign body, or even a scratch in the cornea (this condition is dangerous as it can quickly progress and even cause a dog to lose their eye). In the meantime, you can get Pippa an E-collar (or "cone") to prevent her from scratching the eye and causing further damage and apply artificial tears to the eye two to three times per day.
