Why is my dog pawing her red, swollen, purple eye with discharge?

Pawing at the eye is a sign of pain or at least irritation. Not having examined the eye myself, it is not possible to tell you how long this will take to resolve and I suggest you call your veterinarian tomorrow and ask him. You may also want to ask him about pain medicine.

It sounds like this might be due to an allergy or autoimmune problem given the response to corticosteroids. Sometimes the lymph tissue associated with the third eyelid can become enlarged and I’m wondering if that is the case with the right eye, but it’s difficult to say without being able to examine in person. If the symptoms are not resolving with treatment you may want to ask your vet about referral to an ophthalmologist.

Poor guy. She does have a lot of tear staining, but I don't appreciate any purple bruising there. This looks very suspicious for a tooth root abscess. If your pet is an older dog and never had a teeth cleaning, then the teeth can get really infected and cause swelling and infection through the cheek bone. If this is the case, then a short course of antibiotics will be needed, as well as extraction of the infected tooth through your vet. Another possible cause is a localized reaction or allergy. I would highly recommend taking your pet to the vet within the next few days to have her teeth checked and to be fully assessed. Until you can get her in to be seen, continue to give the Benadryl every 12 hrs since it did seem to help. Poor girl. It would help if you posted a picture here, but it does sound like Ayumi has possible conjunctivitis. If the discharge is yellow or green, then there is an infection that should be checked by your vet. The vet needs to do an eye stain to check for any ulcers/scratches on the eye surface, and then prescribe eye ointment/drops to allow this to heal. It is possible that blowing in her face could have inadvertently caused dust or debris to go into her eye and cause irritation or there could be another cause altogether. Eye problems in dogs can't be treated with anything over the counter unfortunately, so its best to get her seen by your vet soon for treatment. It needs to be scraped for a sample to check for mange as this can alter what medicine can be given. She needs to see a vet to have her eye checked to see if her is an ulcer or something in it that is causing some swelling. The eye lids are discolored and swollen from an infection around the eye which is not uncommon.
