What kind of palm tree is this and is it safe for my dog to be around?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 27.4 lbs

Was hoping you could help me identify the type of palm tree this is and if it’s safe for dogs? I know it isn’t a sago. The seeds dropping from it are about a third of the size of a dime and have a blue/black tint.

It looks like it could be a California Fan Palm. These are the only palm trees native to California. You can contact the local garden center or Extension Office for confirmation.
The seeds/fruit are not known to be toxic, but could cause stomach upset if large amounts are ingested.
