My dog ate Mexican fan palm berries. Are they toxic? He has diarrhea.

It can cause gastro-intestinal upset, labored breathing, eye discharge and sometimes neurologic problems. The most common signs are stomach upset: vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. I am hoping that Buddy's symptoms are mild. If he is eating and has stopped vomiting I would feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or is still vomiting he should see a Vet today for supportive care. I hope this helps and I wish Buddy the best!

If the vomiting persist or there is bloody diarrhea, then you need to go to an ER clinic tonight. You can take her food and water away for the next 4-6 hours and let her stomach rest. Start back with a small amount of boiled chicken and rice or ice and see how she handles that or if she wants it. If she has no appetite or lethargic still by morning, then go to your regular vet.

It looks like it could be a California Fan Palm. These are the only palm trees native to California. You can contact the local garden center or Extension Office for confirmation. The seeds/fruit are not known to be toxic, but could cause stomach upset if large amounts are ingested.

It is definitely a good sign if she is active and is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Avocados are not toxic to dogs (some websites erroneously report that they are), but are high in fat, which can cause some digestive upset. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In this case, dietary indiscretion is possible given that petals were ingested. Assuming the petals were not from a toxic flower, you could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Moose evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results.
