My older dog threw up pink vomit. Is it blood? What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. It could be, the pink tinge might be blood, indicating that he has swallowed something that injured his throat or stomach or he has vomited so much his esophagus is irritated enough to bleed. Either way, I strongly recommend getting him in to see a vet right away, especially if the vomiting has been going on for some time.

The color of the vomit could be caused by some blood (e.g. an injury in the esophagus) or coloring of the food he ate or severe inflammation somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Max for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or stays bloody, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Hello. A small amount of blood in vomitus may simply indicate that a small blood vessel, like a capillary, ruptured during the vomiting act. If it occurs again, it might be a good idea to find out if there are any issues or lesions either in the esophagus or upper part of the stomach. You indicate that Sonny is less than 2 years of age, so I would nor expect anything too serious, such as cancer, but the presence of an inflammatory or erosive lesion is a possibility. Your veterinarian may be able to examine the upper part of Sonny's esophagus under light sedation, or he may need to be thoroughly scoped to examine the lower part of the esophagus & stomach. It sounds as Walter is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

When there is evidence of blood in the vomit, that raises concern for things like a gastrointestinal ulcer, gastrointestinal tumor, severe gastroenteritis, foreign body ingestion, among other possibilities. Some tests that are usually run include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel +/- coagulation profile) and abdominal ultrasound. Thoracic/cervical radiographs may follow. Further diagnostics will be based on the findings up to that point. Treatment will be based on findings. I do think that this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible as he may be getting dehydrated. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be fine with Osito!

Blood in the vomit is definitely cause for concern, as it can indicate stomach ulcers, stomach parasites, or even a foreign body. As puppies are prone to getting into things they shouldn't, Simba may have ingested a toxin such as human pain medication or a piece of a toy. It is concerning that Simba did not feel well after vomiting. I recommend having him seen by a vet as vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Your vet can perform bloodwork and x-rays to rule out the conditions above.
