What if my dog vomits blood but is still eating and acting normal?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. Shorty and crew are cute! If it was just one episode of vomiting, and Shorty seems fine otherwise, I would not panic. If the vomiting continues, or if Shorty does not want to eat, or starts having diarrhea or acting poorly, I'd be concerned. Sometimes vomiting can cause a small amount of throat irritation and blood in the vomit. Large amounts of blood in the vomit are much more concerning.

Poor Colbie! It is possible that the blood in her most recent vomitus was a result of esophageal irritation or tiny tears developing in the esophagus from so much gastric acid exposure. If she is otherwise acting normally and eating without issue, I don't think this warrants a trip to the ER. However, call her vet in the morning and they may want to recheck her sooner or adjust her medication doses. I hope she's feeling better soon!

It sounds as Walter is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

As puppies are prone to getting into things they shouldn't, Simba may have ingested a toxin such as human pain medication or a piece of a toy. It is concerning that Simba did not feel well after vomiting. I recommend having him seen by a vet as vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Your vet can perform bloodwork and x-rays to rule out the conditions above.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Blood in the vomit indicates most commonly stomach lining irritation or ulceration. The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!

If it was a one time instance, then yes, it should be OK to just watch him right now. I do think he should see a vet for sure if it happens again - bloody vomit is not a good sign. If you have some on hand, you can give him oral Omeprazole 10mg once per day. It would be a good idea. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
