New puppy anxiety: How to tell if my pup is sick or just sleepy?

Hello. Puppies do sleep a lot. As long as Sky has periods of activity & is eating well, at least 3 times a day, & has regular eliminations, no diarrhea, then he is not probably overtly ill. But if he is suddenly acting sleepy when he was a more active pup, then this is not normal & he probably needs to be evaluated by your veterinarian. For puppies that are still eating and drinking but lethargic and no signs of GI issues I would be suspicious of a couple of things: 1) puppy is just sleeping more now because he is still growing, Pitt Bull terriers and other large breed dogs can go through pretty fast growth spurts and this can definitely cause pups to sleep more. 2) If puppy is overly lethargic and running out of breathe easily or becoming intolerant to exercise or play I would be suspicious of a cardiovascular abnormality. I would recommend you schedule an appointment to have a vet do a heart auscultation (listen to the heart with microscope) to ensure your pets heart does not have any arrhythmia's or murmurs.

In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. It's impossible to know if this is significant or not without more history and likely a physical exam. If Stormy has been running around playing all day, this is likely normal because she is tired. If there is not a good reason for her to be tired, she is likely sick. If you suspect Stormy is ill, I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian if it lasts beyond 24 hours or if she starts getting worse. I hope this helps.

Although puppies do sleep often during the day they should be very lively in between naps and the naps should be shorter as they get to 4-5months old. I would be concerned this is not a habit but that your puppy is acutally unwell - this is not normal puppy behavior. Please have him assessed by your vet as soon as possible to determine any underlying medical causes

This can be a sign Coco is sick. While puppies can sleep a lot, it's serious that she isn't eating. This is something that has to be checked out by a vet now, and I would take her into one immediately.
