Why does my puppy sleep so much? Is it normal or a sign of illness?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Short answer is not necessarily. Not all puppies are highly energetic and pretty much all puppies sleep a lot. It also takes some time for them to get used to their new environment. I would give him more time for him to come along especially since he is otherwise doing so well. If at any point he develops symptoms of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, he is likely to be just fine. Good luck!

In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, sleeping frequently during the day is not uncommon for puppies less than 8 weeks old. Puppies need a lot of sleep just like human babies do and will change as Sugar gets older. As long as Sugar is normal otherwise (is eating and drinking normally, has normal stool and urine, etc), I wouldn't worry too much. I hope this helps!

If he is eating and drinking well, with no vomiting or diarrhea, then it does not sound abnormal. Some dogs are just more energetic than others However, if this behavior is new, then I would consult your vet for testing. If their thyroid is low then it can lead to lethargy and may be contributing.

Although puppies do sleep often during the day they should be very lively in between naps and the naps should be shorter as they get to 4-5months old. I would be concerned this is not a habit but that your puppy is acutally unwell - this is not normal puppy behavior. Please have him assessed by your vet as soon as possible to determine any underlying medical causes

Hello. This is a very difficult situation to answer in this type forum. There are many questions that need to be answered as well as a good physical exam to determine if something is indeed wrong with Anna. I would say that if she is reluctant to interact & engage with you or your family when there is a fair amount of activity in the house, then yes, this would be quite abnormal for a relatively young dog. So, if you think her sleeping is abnormal, it is very important to have her examined by your veterinarian to rule out disease, infection, anemia, low thyroid function, neurologic dysfunction or anything else that may be responsible for her low energy & excessive sleeping. Puppies generally sleep a lot, most days between 14-18 hours, this is quite normal but if you see other symptoms such as lethargy or lack of appetite then something might be wrong with Aira, in that case you should take her to the vet for a checkup.
