How long until MalAcetic Otic works for my dog's ear infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 1 month old

How long until ear infection treatment shows results? Went to vet yesterday due to suspect ear infection (flapping/scratching; not severe or constant). Looked inside ear + saw inflammation but unsure of infection so cleaned/plucked ears and gave MalAcetic Otic to clean every other day for 14 days. Has dry skin and suspected allergies as well. Licks paws ever since she was a puppy so stained pink. Itch does not interfere with activities. Usually scratches face but was just worried. On Revolution.

Trisha should start feeling better within about 48 hours if the treatment is working. It sounds like the vet decided to hold of on a topical treatment and have you start with just cleaning. So if you clean her ears with the MalAcetic tomorrow and Thursday is she still flapping/itching then I would recommending calling her veterinarian to see if they would like to prescribe her a topical treatment.

I hope Trisha is feeling back to normal soon!

    Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would suggest using the ear medication as directed and if there is no improvement with this treatment then I would have the ears rechecked by the veterinarian for additional treatment options. From your description it sounds as though Trisha is dealing with allergies. I would suggest talking to your veterinarian about other treatment options for allergies such as apoquel and cytopoint. I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On by dermoscent. I would also recommend using a spray called malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the feet several times per day to help relieve any itching on the feet. I hope this helps! Yes, both of these products should help with the infection. the Malacetic solution will treat the fungal / bacterial infection and the Cortavance will help relieve inflammation. It may take several days to see improvement after starting medications. If your dog is extremely uncomfortable due to inflammation in the ear, you may ask your vet if an anti-inflammatory drug such as a steroid or NSAID can be prescribed to help with the discomfort until the ear antibiotic kicks in. If you haven't seen improvement and several days have passed, it is possible a resistant bacteria is growing in the ear and you may need a different medication.

Dog ear infection still itching after Otomax. What can I do?
The main reason infections do not clear is they are not treated for long enough or it may have not been the best medicine to treat it due to resistance. Ideally she needs to be rechecked to see if a culture is needed or oral medicine help. You can try to get an ear cleaner to help keep it clean. IF the ear persistently itch then you may want to consider a food allergy

Poor Jake! Treatment response is variable. Most pets will start to respond within 5-7 days but some may take longer. Some pets are treated for an inner ear infection for up to 6 weeks. In situations like this, it is best to always keep your veterinarian updated with the condition so that they can make any adjustments if needed. It could be food related, environmental allergens, or even an allergic reaction to mites or mosquitos. Sometimes longer term treatment with the ointment, systemic medications, and mite/flea/tick prevention is needed so talk with your vet.

Is MalAcetic ear cleaner good for my basset puppy's dirty, smelly ears?
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The MalAcetic Otic solution is very good as an ear cleanser so you can use for this. I would recommend you clean it twice weekly for now. However, if they continue to look dirty after using it consistently, it would be better to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as she may have an ear infection. Hopefully it resolves.
