Is MalAcetic ear cleaner good for my basset puppy's dirty, smelly ears?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am not sure what you mean by "competitor". Malaseb is a great medicated shampoo! I use it in dogs with yeast and bacteria skin infections. I recommend bathing 2-3 times per week and allow the lather to sit on the skin for 10 mins before rinsing. I would not recommend formulating your own ear cleaner and instead purchase a commercial ear cleaner. I would recommend using Zymox otic cleanser or Epi Otic ear cleanser. Trisha should start feeling better within about 48 hours if the treatment is working. It sounds like the vet decided to hold of on a topical treatment and have you start with just cleaning. So if you clean her ears with the MalAcetic tomorrow and Thursday is she still flapping/itching then I would recommending calling her veterinarian to see if they would like to prescribe her a topical treatment. With the way the Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach forum works an expert may not see a follow up question - if you want to talk to Dr. Summerfield directly you can see if she would be available for a consultation. MalAcetic is labeled for use more than once a month, but if this is how your vet intended it to be used I would recommend checking in with them before changing the frequency of dosing. The wipes may not be that effective for an ear infection unless she tends to develop infections on her external ear. Hope this helps!

You can try to use an ear cleanser in the meantime which you can buy online or at your local pet store though if an infection is present this may help but will not resolve the issue and appropriate therapy for an infection is needed which is based on the organism present. If he truly has mites, they are not going to completely go away with the peroxide so if the ears get dirty again as before, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If properly diagnosed, ear mites can be easily treated. Best of luck!
