Can I use DIY ear cleaner for my dog's frequent ear infections?

Is DIY ear cleaner possible for my springer spaniel, very prone to ear infections solution is getting very expensive

I would not recommend formulating your own ear cleaner and instead purchase a commercial ear cleaner. I would recommend using Zymox otic cleanser or Epi Otic ear cleanser. Hi there and thank you for asking this question. During active infections often prescription cleaners have products in them that help the medication work more efficiently. In between infections sometimes DIY cleaning solutions can be ok, but i really approach this on a case by case basis. Ideally trying to identify the underlying cause and treating that (often allergies) is the best approach. I would consider reaching out to your veterinarian to discuss what types of infections he has had (bacteria or yeast) to help
Determine what ingredients to incorporate. I would also inquire about a hypoallergenic diet trial as well as antihistamine use. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

In my honest opinion, there are so many great ear cleansers out there I would always recommend buying one instead of making it. Years of research have gone into a lot of these products and they are truly the best to use on sensitive ears. If you are just cleaning for a maintenance clean or you are treating due to problems, it's always best to discuss the various products that your vet recommends. Homemade cleansers can often times not be pH balanced resulting in drying of the ear canal or pain/sting upon application. Good luck with Chloe.

How to help my dog's ear infection when we're traveling home?

You can try to use an ear cleanser in the meantime which you can buy online or at your local pet store though if an infection is present this may help but will not resolve the issue and appropriate therapy for an infection is needed which is based on the organism present. Dog has ear infection after Petco spa. Can I treat it at home?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on your description, I am unsure as to where the infection is located. If it is in the ears and they are becoming infected, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at the ears so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the ears just have a moderate amount of wax in them, you can use an over the counter veterinary product called Zymox otic cleanser. If after using this product for 7 days there is no improvement, I would recommend bringing Pearl to a veterinarian for further treatment. I hope this helps! What can I give my dog for an ear infection to help her feel better?

However, the concern with just starting an ear medication without examining the ear canals is that you may be administering ear medications in an ear with a ruptured ear drum. Is cleaning my dog's ears enough to get rid of an ear infection?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The short answer is not necessarily. That is especially true if if Buddy's ear infection is severe and actually not sensitive to the ear cleanser or antibiotics used initially which would be required if they as I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!

My dog has yellow ear discharge. Should I use Epi-Otic or Zymox?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Princess! That looks like a decent ear infection. I highly recommend a vet visit and a cytology of the yellow discharge so the appropriate medicated drop can be used. Epiotic is a good ear cleaner but there are even more specific ones geared towards the type of infection she has. If you want to try cleaning first the I suggest every other day. If they aren’t improving I would take her in before doing anything else. I hope this’s helps and I wish Princess the best!
