Is my Siberian husky puppy too big or a Malamute mix?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 6 days old | 60 lbs

This summer we added a 2nd husky to our house. We were told he was pure siberian which is what our female is. She is quite petite at 40lbs full grown. Our male just turned 7 mo old and is already almost 60lbs and has much longer fur. I've looked online and am having a hard time figuring out if he may be a crossed with malamute possibly? Is it possible for siberians to have longer plush fur and to be so big? We were told he would max out at 70lbs but I don't see how with him being 60lbs already

Hello, thank you for your question about Apollo.

Male dogs tend to be larger in size and often have a heavier build then female dogs of the same breed. There is some variation in the fur of huskies, and it also possible that the long fur you are seeing could still be Apollo's "puppy coat". However, it is also possible that he may be part malamute as these dogs are usually larger and have a different fur than huskies.

If you are interested in knowing exactly what breed Apollo is. There is a canine DNA test, the wisdom panel, that can be performed to get more information. This test is performed by getting a swab from inside the dogs mouth. I believe these tests can be bought online or through some veterinary offices.

Is my dog a Husky or a Malamute? How can I tell the difference?

Its a little hard to gauge, as theres not a great deal of size reference here. Typically, huskys are a bit smaller and more "lean." It may help if you let us know her weight and age; under her pets info there is no age but it says she's 30 pounds, not sure thats accurate. My 4-month-old husky puppy's fur isn't thick. Is that normal?

He looks like a handsome boy! Its hard to appreciate the character of his haircoat based on picture, but it does look full, though he doesn't seem to have a thick undercoat. I see you are in Belize; if you are in a warm climate, he isn't going to get that very thick coat, as that would increase the chances of him overheating. How can I identify my puppy's breed and predict its adult size?

Hi there. I'm afraid it's not possible to tell what breed a puppy is just by looking at a photo, as coat color and length, general body shape, etc. often change a great deal as puppies grow. From what I can see, he looks like a medium-to-large breed of some sort. Possibly some kind of retriever mix, but that's just a guess. If you don't have any information about his parents, your best bet would be to have a DNA test such as a Wisdom panel done. This would give you more information about what breed (or mix of breeds) he is, which would allow you to make a more educated guess about his adult size and weight.

How to identify my young dog's breed without a DNA test at home?

Since it is so young and I can't really look at its feet for size reference, it is a little difficult to distinguish Ghost from a from different breeds. These include Husky, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute, American Eskimo, or any mix of the breeds. Hope this helps clear up anything you were wondering around. If you really want to be sure, you can do a DNA test on your through one of several different companies. This will give you precise genetic information on Ghost.

Hi, it's hard to appreciate Winters size from your photos but he's a handsome dog and definitely looks like a husky. Remember, he's still growing and will continue to grow until he's around 10-12mths old. His adult size will resemble his parents, so if you know what size they are, Winter will be like them. You don't need to fatten him up, it's healthier to stay leaner.
