How to identify my young dog's breed without a DNA test at home?

The puppy is very young so it would be hard to tell. It's possible it could be a mixed breed with some sort of collie in it from the coloration, however many breeds have that same coloration so it would be impossible to know. If you know the mother or father, you can determine breed better by that. There are also saliva DNA tests that can be used to determine the breed of a dog. Most veterinary clinics and even some pet stores will carry these and are very simple to use if you are very curious.

Hi there. I'm afraid it's not possible to tell what breed a puppy is just by looking at a photo, as coat color and length, general body shape, etc. often change a great deal as puppies grow. From what I can see, he looks like a medium-to-large breed of some sort. Possibly some kind of retriever mix, but that's just a guess. If you don't have any information about his parents, your best bet would be to have a DNA test such as a Wisdom panel done. This would give you more information about what breed (or mix of breeds) he is, which would allow you to make a more educated guess about his adult size and weight.

I think this may be a repetition of a previous question.. He looks similar to a shepherd dog, but it is difficult to determine that as he is very young. In 5-6 months would be easier to determine the breed. As you mentioned, it’s a bit of a guessing game to determine the dogs breed based on pictures alone. However, Chappie, Candle, and Jimmy look most like Chihuahua mixes to me. There are DNA tests available, such as Wisdom panels, but nothing is 100% accurate. Regardless, they’re adorable!
