How to handle aggressive male dog when my female dog is in heat?

Thanks for sharing your toe, however since we aren't human doctors there isn't much that can be done for that and you should visit your regular doctor. That said, if this is linked to your dog being in heat, keeping the two separated during her heat cycle may help reduce the behavior and prevent a fight from breaking out. Having your female spayed may also help reduce the aggressive behavior if it is related to her heat cycle as she will no longer have them. If the behavior continues to escalate, keeping the two dogs apart and speaking with a trainer in person is best so that they can address the issue and provide a more tailored plan. Picking up and keeping any and all toys, etc removed during this as well as feeding the dogs separately may also help reduce the behavior as well.

Unfortunately you cannot unless you have him neutered. Because she is in heat, he wants to mate with her, and even if he mates with her again, he will continue this behavior as long as she is in heat. My advice is to have him neutered after her heat ends. If you cannot stand this noise, it may be best to have him stay at a friend's house until her heat is over. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is there anyone that can take him or the female for you for the next 2-3 weeks? Otherwise the only strong enough medication that would work would have to obtained from your Vet. Drugs like Trazadone, acepromazine, Xanax, etc are prescription only. I would doubt that an over the counter medication will control this for you. I would contact your Vet and see if they will prescribe something over the phone but they may require an exam first. All you can do is keep them separated - best to take one of them to another location (a family or fiend's house). I suggest you have them spayed/neutered (or at least one of them) or this will be an ongoing problem.

If you are unable to have one or both of the dogs spayed/neutered then you will have to be diligent about keeping them separated while the female is in heat. I would recommend keeping the female in the house and the male outside because if you leave the female outside there is a chance another male dog could mate her. I hope this helps. This is pretty normal. Protecting her from other possible males - doesn't matter if they are human. Doesn't even matter if they are male or female. This could get ugly fast and can turn to severe aggression. If you are not planning on breeding them I suggest you get them spayed/neutered as to not promote any behavioral issues.

Unfortunately if he is acting like this due to a female being in heat then the only way to stop this is by neutering him. If this is always occurring I would recommend a trainer coming to your home to evaluate him but my concern is that it is from a female being in heat.
