My male dog is howling like crazy for a female in heat nearby. Help!

Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. If you are still concerned that there may be a medical problem then I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian. Unfortunately you cannot unless you have him neutered. Because she is in heat, he wants to mate with her, and even if he mates with her again, he will continue this behavior as long as she is in heat. My advice is to have him neutered after her heat ends. If you cannot stand this noise, it may be best to have him stay at a friend's house until her heat is over. Best of luck.

Chico is whining because he wants to mate with the female in heat. You can remove the female in heat from your home until she is out of heat (have her stay with a friend), or have him stay somewhere else until she is out of heat. The way to stop this permanently is to have him neutered and your female dog spayed.

By your description Charlie is not neutered? If he seems ok otherwise then I am suspicious of an in heat female in the vicinity. If this is the problem the hopefully within the next week or so he will calm down. Of course, it is never wrong to have him Seen by a veterinarian to make sure nothing else is wrong. This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on. Having her spayed should help with this problem but for now I would keep them separate if possible. I hope this helps! If your dog is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, peeing, pooping) and not coughing, sneezing, having vomiting or diarrhea then yes, he could be smelling females in heat. If you are not planning on breeding him it is suggest you have him neutered. Many dogs run away in search of females and they can be difficult to manage. It is healthier for them overall to be neutered if not being used for breeding. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is there anyone that can take him or the female for you for the next 2-3 weeks? Otherwise the only strong enough medication that would work would have to obtained from your Vet. Drugs like Trazadone, acepromazine, Xanax, etc are prescription only. I would doubt that an over the counter medication will control this for you. I would contact your Vet and see if they will prescribe something over the phone but they may require an exam first.
