My male dog barks frantically at female in heat. How to stop?

Chico is whining because he wants to mate with the female in heat. You can remove the female in heat from your home until she is out of heat (have her stay with a friend), or have him stay somewhere else until she is out of heat. The way to stop this permanently is to have him neutered and your female dog spayed.

Unfortunately if he is acting like this due to a female being in heat then the only way to stop this is by neutering him. If this is always occurring I would recommend a trainer coming to your home to evaluate him but my concern is that it is from a female being in heat. It is likely that your dog is hoarse from all the barking. Having a female dog in heat near him and not being allowed to get to her, is very stressful for your dog. If you could give him to a friend temporarily until she is past her heat (about three weeks after she stops bleeding), he may be happier and not so stressed. You also may consider having him neutered in order to avoid him getting her pregnant. Unless you are planning to breed the female, it may also be a good idea to have her spayed about 2 months after her heat.

Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. If you are still concerned that there may be a medical problem then I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian. This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on. Having her spayed should help with this problem but for now I would keep them separate if possible. I hope this helps! I can understand being worried about your male dog, but this is normal. He wants to mate with Bailey, and the hormones are effecting him and causing him to pant. This can go on for days, and sometimes males can will stop eating and can injury themselves trying to get to the female so they can mate. If you do not want puppies, the only way to stop this behavior is to move either Bailey or your male dog out of the house. Preferably the male dog so you can keep Bailey isolated to prevent her from mating. Have him go stay at a friend's house while she is in heat (this lasts three to four weeks). I would also make an appointment with the vet to have him neutered, and I would get Bailey spayed after she is out of heat. Otherwise, you will have to deal with this every time she is in heat. Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.
