My Great Pyrenees puppy won't eat puppy food, is she eating enough?

Giant breed puppies need to eat at least a large breed, high quality puppy food to ensure slow and consistent growth. This will help to avoid developmental, skeletal abnormalities. Purina Pro Plan or Science Diet both make great formulas. Royal Canin goes one step further and makes a diet specific for giant breed puppies that is specific for the age of the puppy (the needs change as they grow). I recommend this brand most because of the specificity for the giant breed dogs. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Your puppy should be eating a puppy food formula (the large breed formulas) until Luci is around 11 months old and then you can transition her to the adult Abound formula that your other dog is currently eating. There are a number of great puppy foods out there. Hill's, Royal Canin, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Orijen or Purina would be great options you can find at your local pet food store.

Did your veterinarian tell you that they were concerned about Coco's weight? If not, then I would continue as you have been doing. (Remember, it is always better to keep puppies a little thin to help prevent joint problems.) I haven't used Wholehearted's puppy diet before, but it looks like a good food. I think feeding twice daily is perfect at this point. (I will feed three times a day until they are 3 months old, then drop down to twice daily.) I don't have any concerns about what you're doing for Coco, but be sure to contact your vet if you have any concerns since they have examined her and can give you a better idea about her weight. First, I would make sure you feed Dio a puppy food, not an adult food. Second, make sure you are feeding him enough cups of food. Third, make sure to feed a high quality large breed puppy food. A grain free brand like Merrick or Wellness or Taste of the Wild would be great. Even Science Diet Large Breed puppy would be ok. Last, make sure your puppy has had a fecal test run to make sure he doesn’t have worms. A monthly heartworm prevention, like Heartgard or Interceptor, treats parasites too. If your dog is still not gaining, they may need further testing or work up. In addition, adding a probiotic may help as well. I like Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics.

I personally would choose a food like Iams, science diet or royal canin over rachael ray simply because these companies have been around for a very long time and have done a lot of research to back their products. Some of these newer foods or "boutique" foods do not properly research their products and therefore, aren't as high quality as they claim. I would just tell your sisters this and see if they would be willing to switch. If you do decide to switch her to the new food, I would slow transition her from the old food to the new food over a 10-14 day period to prevent an upset stomach. I hope this helps!

Mack seems right on track for his weight and breed. If you are concerned about his body condition score I would be happy to look at a picture and help you decide if it is too low. You can also try adding healthy lean proteins to his puppy food to help with growth. This would include boiled chicken breast and extra lean ground beef.

Hello. I think that is an excellent idea. Even though there is terrier in the mix, the Pyrenees part of him might still carry some hip dysplasia genes & this can still manifest as he ages. All a large breed diet does is allow for a slightly lower growth curve, allowing more time for bones, tendons, ligaments & muscle tissue to mature together.
