Does my Great Pyrenees mix puppy need large breed puppy food?

Giant breed puppies need to eat at least a large breed, high quality puppy food to ensure slow and consistent growth. This will help to avoid developmental, skeletal abnormalities. Purina Pro Plan or Science Diet both make great formulas. Royal Canin goes one step further and makes a diet specific for giant breed puppies that is specific for the age of the puppy (the needs change as they grow). I recommend this brand most because of the specificity for the giant breed dogs. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Large or giant breed puppies should be fed an appropriate large/giant breed puppy diet until about 18 months of age. The reason being that they develop slower than other breeds. Many do not stop growing until around 2 years of age. Most above average and premium brands have a diet for large breed puppies. Brands include Canidae, Orijen, Acana and Taste of the Wild. Choose the diet that is easy to buy, that Sarge will eat and will not cause stomach upset. Personally, I'm not a fan of the BB line. Your puppy should be eating a puppy food formula (the large breed formulas) until Luci is around 11 months old and then you can transition her to the adult Abound formula that your other dog is currently eating. There are a number of great puppy foods out there. Hill's, Royal Canin, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Orijen or Purina would be great options you can find at your local pet food store.

Large breeds can develop orthopedic diseases such as hypertrophic osteodystrophy and panosteitis related to caloric intake, fat and protein. Large breed dog food have been developed to provide optimum nutrition while reducing the risk of these disorders. I would definitely recommend keeping Charlie on a large breed puppy formula. I personally would choose a food like Iams, science diet or royal canin over rachael ray simply because these companies have been around for a very long time and have done a lot of research to back their products. Some of these newer foods or "boutique" foods do not properly research their products and therefore, aren't as high quality as they claim. I would just tell your sisters this and see if they would be willing to switch. If you do decide to switch her to the new food, I would slow transition her from the old food to the new food over a 10-14 day period to prevent an upset stomach. I hope this helps!

Lifetime large breed dog food is formulated for all life stages, including puppies. Since he is already 60 pounds, you can begin to transition him to this diet at any time. Please switch diets gradually by mixing the old and new diets together for 5-7 days to ease the transition.

She really needs the additional nutrients in that is in the puppy food so maybe you could try mixing the two types of food or adding some canned food that is puppy food. You could also give her a multi-vitamin to help if needed. For her size she should probably eating about 4 cups of food a day. You can also add canned food to entice her to eat. If you are unsure whether her weight is okay, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure she isn’t underweight. I hope this helps.
