My 9-week Great Dane puppy has cataracts. Is it a vaccine reaction?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lola! Lola's eye is very abnormal. I wonder if it is something genetic like early cataracts. Has the eye been abnormal since you got her? I would highly recommend that you see a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Your Veterinarian should be able to refer you. be sure your Vet checked her intra-ocular pressure, danes are prone to glaucoma. It appears you took her to the Vet and they stained the eye for an ulcer. They can also get rolling in or rolling out of the eye lids. June is such a cutie! Unfortunately without seeing it, I cannot say what it is. If it is cataracts then it is possible that the congenital cataracts could get worse and could eventually lead to blindness. There isn't any good treatment to help prevent it from progressing. If it becomes mature and is causing blindness, you can have an ophthalmologist do surgery to repair it. If the recheck is still seeing the white speck, you could always request to have an ophthalmology consult done as well. The breeder may or may not be willing to do that. It could also be a cholesterol deposit which is benign and won't cause any issues. I hope this helps!

Cataracts normally appear as cloudiness of the pupil only - this is the black part of the eye in the center, inside the iris. So the surface of the eye should look normal, but the black part may look cloudy. What you are describing - a bluish "film" on the surface of the entire eye - sounds more like some type of problem affecting the cornea. This can be a sign of glaucoma, or some other problem such as corneal dystrophy. Cataracts can be treated surgically if this ends up being the problem, just as in humans. Glaucoma can be treated medically with eye drops in some cases, while other affected dogs may need surgery for this problem as well. I would recommend taking Siggy to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - your vet should be able to narrow down the possibilities based on the appearance of the eye, and can also do some testing if needed to make a definite diagnosis and see what can be done to treat the problem.

Puppies vision develops gradually between 2 - 7 weeks of age and it is very hard to tell at this age how this will improve, The eyes do appear a little hazy and I recommend a vet check to rule out any infectious or inflammatory cause which may improve with treatment. Conjunctivitis, ulcers and certain viral infections can cause 'blue eye' and a full health check is recommended

Hello! Getting a new puppy is so exciting. Unfortunately, from the photo, it is very hard to get a sense of the abnormality you're concerned about. I would make sure that any puppy from a breeder has a health guarantee and also has recent records of a clean bill of health from their veterinarian. You can ask for these things or even ask that the puppy be examined by an ophthalmologist prior to purchase to make sure the change of her eye truly is 'nothing'.

From the picture it looks like Bambi has catarats. However, other problems can accompany cataracts that I can’t evaluate from a picture. Secondary problems such as conjunctivitis, uveitis, and even glaucoma. Also diabetes can cause cataracts. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a little difficult to see due to the flash, but if the area is in the eye itself, it may be the beginning of a cataract. If you are referring to the area in the corner of the eye, closes to the nose, it is normal for the skin around the eye to have a little less hair. Cataracts are very common in dogs, especially as they get older but may be a sign of an underlying health condition such as diabetes. I recommend d having Cooper seen by a vet if you believe there is something abnormal about his eye.
