My dog has a gray spot in his eye that's growing. Is it a cataract?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Spatsie! From your pictures, the affected area is either with in the anterior chamber or the corneal surface of the eye. It is not the lens so it is likely not nuclear sclerosis or a cataract. With glaucoma the eye is very red, enlarged, and painful. From your picture the sclera (white part of the eye) doens't apear red. Glaucomoa is diagnosed based on measuring the intra-ocular pressure of the eye with a tonopen or other device. My worry is that the white substance is white blood cells (hypopyon) with in the anterior chamber (which can lead to glaucoma). Corneal ulcers, corneal abscesses, uveitis, and systemic illnesses commonly cause hypopyon. The other possibility is a severe corneal ulcer. Spatsie needs to have his eye examined by a Veterinarian. It is hard to say exactly what the issue may be with Draco's eye without performing an ocular exam on him and running a few tests on the eye first, but I can offering a possibility. Spots on the cornea (clear part of the eye) itself can indicate a corneal ulcer or breaks in the cornea. These can be painful and uncomfortable. You may notice tearing or frequent discharge from the eye. Your veterinarian can diagnose a corneal ulcer with an ocular exam and a few tests. It is treatable with medication. I hope this helps and I hope you are able to take Draco into his veterinarian soon!

Hello I can't tell exactly what is going on with Jack but it could be a type of cataract forming in his lens causing that spot. If he isn't squinting, does not have any eye discharge, redness and/or cloudiness you can monitor that spot for now and contact you veterinarian about how soon they would want to examine his eye more closely with a specific light and lens.

It sounds like your dog may have cataracts, which can occur as dog’s age or with diseases like Diabetes. If this change has occurred suddenly I would recommend having Coco checked out as soon as possible. If it has been a gradual change it is probably less concerning. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it would be a good idea to mention this to your veterinarian next time he goes in. However, this may be normal. Sometimes there are changes in pigmentation in that region of the eye which are not considered abnormal especially if not bothering the patient. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is a very interesting photo, and a great shot, however it cannot show us where exactly in the eye the mass is. It appears that it is within the globe of the eye itself, however it could also be in other locations. It is possible to get 'freckles' in the eye, however if there is a small mass, cancer is possible. I recommend you have Trace to the vet to have the eye assessed fully, and an ophthalmologist may be required. Some masses can be benign as well, and only a sample of the mass can confirm, but a simple eye exam to determine the exact location may be enough. It could also just be a normal feature of the eye that is presenting in an abnormal way (we call this 'artifact') on the image. Best of luck with Trace!

It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures which layer of the eye the opacity is in, but I will discus the most common reasons for an opacity in the outermost aspect of the eye (the cornea). The first possibility is that if Lily had an ulceration of her eye, that the area could have scarred in which will result in tissue that is more white. I would have expected that you would have noticed that here eye was red, or she was squinting or tearing if that were the case. The most common reason that a corneal opacity will appear without any injury to the eye is actually a benign fat or cholesterol deposit. We don't know why some dogs develop them, but they tend to develop them in the other eye over time as well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Lily to verify that is what they think is going on. If that is the case, then there isn't any reason for concern. If Lily's eye is red or if she is squinting or rubbing her eye, please have your vet examine her right away. I hope that was helpful and answered your question.
