Is my 5-month-old Golden Retriever puppy too skinny at 8.5 kg?

Hello. Your picture seems to show a very healthy young dog, but without being able to feel how prominent the ribs & backbone can be palpated, it is impossible to ascertain his condition. A dog, under a year of age, should have some muscle & fat protecting the underlying skeletal structure. With just a little pressure, you should be able to feel ribs & backbone, not sharp points. That is a better way to tell than just by weight because size & bone structure can affect things. If there is a fairly good layer of flesh on your dog, he should be just fine. Aww Eva is so cute! She looks to be at a healthy weight for her size. As with people, not all puppies grow at the same rate and it’s not always linear - they have growth “spurts” just like people. Also, not all Goldens are built the same- some are petite and slim, some are beefier. Most important is that she is a healthy weight for her frame. Your vet can always help with this but we also have a healthy weight tool. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ideal weight is based on more than age and breed. Skeletal frame is also important. Posting a picture of Luna would be helpful. On AVERAGE a 3 month female golden puppy should weigh around is between 16 and 22 lbs. It is hard to make puppies fat. I recommend using the bag label for feeding instructions. If she is too thin (see hip bones and can see and easily feel every rib) increase the amount of food and if she is too fat (can't easily feel ribs and no waist) then decrease it some. Because Ghontu is a Golden Retriever, her full weight can be between 65-75 pounds. At about five months of age (19 weeks), she should be around 3/4s of her full grown weight, and her weight of 46 pounds is normal. It is expected that she will continue to grow every day, and I would not be concerned about her weight.

She does look a little underweight, first of all i would recommend taking her to the vet for a checkup, there might be a medical reason for her being undeweight and this must be ruled out first thing. if she is cleared by the vet, you should switch her food to a high quality grain free diet such as Orijen, Evolve or Taste of the wild, you can feed her 3 times a day until she starts gaining weight.

Hi Fred! Male Neutered Golden Retrievers should weigh between 65-75 pounds. 90lbs may be a little overweight for Milo. You should be able to easily feel Milo's ribs but not see them. When you look from above, he should be an hourglass shape. When you look at Milo from the side while he stands, his midsection should have an upward slope. Extra supplements can mean extra calories for Milo, so I would talk to your primary are veterinarian about the possibility of starting Milo on particular supplements based on his need and medical history.
