My 1-year-old Golden Retriever is underweight. What can I do?

Getting her spayed would definitely be the most effective and easiest way, if this isn't something you would consider then i would recommend switching to a better quality food such as Orijen, Acana or Taste of the wild.

Aww Eva is so cute! She looks to be at a healthy weight for her size. As with people, not all puppies grow at the same rate and it’s not always linear - they have growth “spurts” just like people. Also, not all Goldens are built the same- some are petite and slim, some are beefier. Most important is that she is a healthy weight for her frame. There is no one "best" food. The optimal diet is one that your dog eats, can easily be bought and does not cause stomach upset. That said, certain brands are better than others. Stay away from store or discount brands. These typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Better or premium brands include ProPlan, Canidae, Orijen, Royal Canin and Acana.

You should feed your puppy a complete puppy food. Royal Canin puppy food for large breeds would be the proper food. You may need to have your puppy dewormed. You may also need to feed more. If your puppy does not eat its food it may not like it, so you can slowly transition to puppy food from another brand. I recommend you take your puppy to a pet doctor for an exam and deworming and vaccinations.

Make sure Ruby is properly dewormed and feed her a high-quality large breed puppy food such as Royal Canin or Purina pro plan. Don’t be in a rush to put weight on her, she will gain it naturally. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
