My German Shepherd puppy has gastroenteritis. When will he recover?

Hello, this depends on what kind of GI condition you are referring to. If you are treating a GI condition with antibiotics, well, this should improve within a week of treatment. If you are speaking about side effects associated with antibiotic administration, then this would like persist until the effect of that antibiotic has subsided. This may take several days to clear up. If her GI condition does not improve within the next 3-5 days, then have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If lethargy is not present, you could try, as a first approach to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It can take 1-2 weeks to recover from parvo, and it is probably encouraging that Frank is not worse at this point. Even when you are careful about potential exposure and when you follow the recommended vaccine protocol sometimes puppies will still become infected with the virus. While I can’t say the exact odds without knowing more details about his lab values and physical exam, some studies have shown a 90% success rate with inpatient treatment in a hospital and the longer he goes without developing life threatening complications the better his prognosis is.

I'm very sorry that Rio has parvo, but it's good news that his appetite has increased and the consistence of his poop has increased. The tarry consistence does indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, so he's not out of the woods yet. It does take some time for a dog to fully recover from parvo, and it can be weeks before a dog is back to normal. The acute phase is between 7-14 days. A sign of how well a dog is doing is how well he is eating. If he is eating and there is no vomiting and diarrhea, then the prognosis is good. Make sure he does stay hydrated because dehydration is the number one cause of death in these dogs. Offer Rio small amounts of Pediasure using a syringe or small turkey baster. Give any medications prescribed by the vet, and if he starts vomiting, his stool gets very bloody, he stops eating, or he becomes extremely lethargic, rush him back into a vet immediately. Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. I can certainly understand being concerned about Apollo! Given that he is up to date on his vaccines and deworming treatment, it could be that the diarrhea is caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Keep in mind, however, that at 10 weeks of age he isn't old enough to be fully vaccinated, so there is always a chance it could be something more serious like parvovirus or distemper causing the diarrhea. I would keep a close eye on him, and if you see blood in his diarrhea, he starts vomiting, he becomes lethargic, he starts having diarrhea more frequently, he develops a high fever, he becomes very lethargic, he has reddened eyes, and/or he develops a nasal and eye discharge, have him seen by a vet immediately. Having diarrhea three times over a nine hour time period with no other signs isn't excessive enough to warrant a trip to the animal ER, so I will give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. As I said above, monitor him closely for the signs I mentioned earlier in my answer, and rush him into a vet right away if you see any of them.
