My 6-week puppy has stomach issues after antibiotics. How long?

Hello. It might take 3-5 days minimum to see if the diet will work. Often, when we suspect a problem is due to a food sensitivity, the food trial is 6-8 weeks. So, it can take time to see if the diarrhea subsides. Just make sure she is drinking plenty of water & not losing weight. Also, make sure you communicate to your vet that the diarrhea did not respond to the metronidazole. She may want to continue testing, switch to another antibiotic or medication. That is good that he doesn't have parvo but could have a different virus. He could also have an intestinal parasite so he should be tested for parasites, as well. It is difficult to predict how long it will take him to recover because every dog is different but I would expect him to start showing some improvement within a few days of starting treatment. Hopefully, with the treatment he will fully recover, although I am not sure of the cause of the gastroenteritis. If he doesn't start improving then your vet may need to do additional testing and add some additional medications. Hope he gets better soon! He is very cute!

If Lolli is currently on antibiotics, she could be sick from that. A side effect of antibiotics is GI upset. Try giving her the antibiotics with boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice to see if that helps. If it doesn't, have her seen by her vet.

I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. First off, I'm so sorry that Piper had complications during her surgery! Complications can happen, and if the bowels needed to be relocated to find the bleed, it does make sense to put her on a course of antibiotics to be safe. If her bowels were perforated, the vet would have told you about that complication, so it's more than likely she was prescribed the antibiotics as a precautionary measure. I'd be careful comparing how humans and dogs are dose in medications because dogs require different doses of drugs and may be given them for longer durations. Hi there. In my experience, it often takes 48 hours or so to see improvement in diarrhea after starting metronidazole. Full resolution of the problem may take another 2-3 days from there. So if Jake's diarrhea seems to be improving and his appetite is better, this is a good sign. I would continue with the current treatment plan prescribed by your veterinarian. If his diarrhea has not resolved in another 2-3 days, then I would recommend taking him back in for a recheck to see if some other type of treatment is needed.

If it is just intestinal parasites, several dewormings should be enough to set Nacho on the path to recovery. It may take a week or two unless he has an exceedingly high worm burden. If he isn't showing improvement a few days after being dewormed, have him rechecked by your veterinarian. Supportive care may be indicated until he is feeling better.
