My 10-week GSD puppy has sudden diarrhea but acts normal. Help!

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 10 days old | 17 lbs

I have a 10 week old german shepherd that had a solid stool earlier today, but half an hour later had aggressive diarrhea. It has happened about 3 times now (approx. every 3 hrs). He is up to date on all of his vaccines and worm treatments. He had a negative fecal exam last week, and he also took his first dose of trifexis a week ago. I changed his food about a week and a half ago and he has been doing fine. He is still acting normal, but the diarrhea is concerning because of the quick onset.

I can certainly understand being concerned about Apollo! Given that he is up to date on his vaccines and deworming treatment, it could be that the diarrhea is caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Keep in mind, however, that at 10 weeks of age he isn't old enough to be fully vaccinated, so there is always a chance it could be something more serious like parvovirus or distemper causing the diarrhea. I would keep a close eye on him, and if you see blood in his diarrhea, he starts vomiting, he becomes lethargic, he starts having diarrhea more frequently, he develops a high fever, he becomes very lethargic, he has reddened eyes, and/or he develops a nasal and eye discharge, have him seen by a vet immediately. Having diarrhea three times over a nine hour time period with no other signs isn't excessive enough to warrant a trip to the animal ER, so I will give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. As I said above, monitor him closely for the signs I mentioned earlier in my answer, and rush him into a vet right away if you see any of them. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon possibly secondary to the parasite infection, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My 11-week-old puppy has diarrhea but is still playing and eating.

Thanks for the question. I'm glad to hear that Fenris is still playing and eating, but I am concerned that the stool is so watery. Yes, it is always possible that this is just a dietary issue, however because it has been going on for 4 days, and is so watery, I'm concerned that this is something infectious. At 11 weeks my main concern is parvovirus, however most of these pups act really sick, but it is still possible. Other possibilities are things like giardia, coccidia, or a viral infection. I recommend collecting a sample of the diarrhea in a bag or container and bringing it to a veterinarian for testing. They will be able to determine if there is a specific medication that is needed to fix the problem. Puppies this age don't have a lot of reserves, and can become dehydrated quickly. I'm happy that Fenris seems to be otherwise feeling okay so far, but I would feel better getting the diarrhea under control before it becomes a more serious problem. I hope Fenris is back to normal soon.

Is my 1-month-old German Shepherd puppy's diarrhea treatment safe?

By loose motions, I am assuming that you mean that Leo has diarrhea. Common causes for diarrhea in a puppy include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Ofloxacin is an antibiotic which can help with bacterial overgrowth in the colon that can cause diarrhea. It can also be used in dogs with viral infections (such as parvo virus) to prevent secondary bacterial infections; it will not treat a virus specifically. I am not familiar with lectogen, but it may be baby formula. This can be a good short-term supplement for puppies that cannot yet tolerate food or dog mush (food mixed with water to make a mush). Puppies start eating food between 4-6 weeks of age. If Leo is not old enough to eat food, then I would recommend using a puppy milk replacer because it is more balanced than human milk replacer/formula or cow's milk. However, my concerns are that you have not mentioned treatments for intestinal parasites. I would recommend that you talk about fecal parasite screening with your vet. You may also want to discuss testing for parvo virus if it is prevalent in your area. The most important thing in puppies with diarrhea is to encourage lots of fluids, such as puppy milk replacer, water, gatorade, or pedialyte.

GSD puppy loose stool won't stop after food change. What to ask vet?

Chronic diarrhea can be a frustrating issue! In a young German Shepherd, my main concerns for Charlie are that he may have intestinal parasites, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or inflammatory bowel disease. If he has not recently had a stool sample checked for parasites, this is a good starting point. If no parasites are seen, consider discussing blood work (CBC, chemistry, B12, TLI, folate) and an abdominal ultrasound to try to get to the bottom of this situation. Probiotics (Fortiflora and Proviable are two brands) may be beneficial. I hope that all goes well!

My 8-month-old puppy has diarrhea nightly for two weeks. What's wrong?

Poor Daisy! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. Definitely keep her out of the cat box. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. My new 9-week-old puppy has diarrhea. How can I treat it at home?

It is very common for puppies to have diarrhea. This can happen with intestinal parasites, infectious diseases such as parvo virus, change in diet or even stress from the change in homes. It's possible that he also picked up and ate something off the grass that upset his system. If he's normal otherwise (no vomiting, good appetite, normal activity level) you could start by giving him plain boiled chicken breast and plain white rice in a 1 to 1 ratio. You can also add a small amount of pumpkin puree as the fiber can help firm up the stools. If the diarrhea continues or he becomes ill, starts vomiting, acting lethargic, or doesn't want to eat, I would strongly recommend taking him to a veterinarian right away. They will most likely want to do a fecal exam to check for parasites, a parvo test to check for this very serious illness and may even do blood work and x-rays to look for evidence of a stomach or intestinal blockage. This is very common in puppies since they like to chew on and swallow things they shouldn't.
