My 7-month GSD puppy has diarrhea & vomited but is playing. Vet?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 9 days old | 35 lbs

7 month old German shepherd dog has had diarrhea for the past 24 hours and has vomited one time. She’s been eating and playing, should take her into the vet?

If lethargy is not present, you could try, as a first approach to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

If she is behaving normally, withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet.
If symptoms persist or if Genie develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain then have her physically examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Zia. You can see as a side effect some vomiting, and while protracted vomiting is a concern, throwing up a little bit isn't too bad. If you are giving her a new food, then I'm wondering if that caused the vomiting today. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Vomiting is always concerning, but I can give you a home remedy for Rocky to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Given that he is up to date on his vaccines and deworming treatment, it could be that the diarrhea is caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. My 6-week GSD puppy threw up white after vaccination. What's wrong?

I recommend to call your veterinarian. Puppies can vomit for many reasons but something like a vaccine reaction may be the cause and this needs to be treated. Your vet will make a recommendation based upon her exam yesterday. Just so you know, German Shepherds need to eat diets formulated for large breed puppies. This helps to ensure that they grow and develop properly. I recommend Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy. It will ensure even, normal growth and is very easy to digest because the GSD can be prone to an upset stomach. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My GSD has liquid stool. Why is she still active and eating normally?

She may have eaten something she shouldn't have, it could be infection or possibly intestinal parasites. You can submit a stool sample to your vet to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. In the meantime, withhold food for 12 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal before transitioning slowly to Jedda's regular diet. See your vet if Jedda becomes lethargic, begins vomiting, loses her appetite or exhibits signs of abdominal pain. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: cottage cheese, boneless/skinless chicken breast, cooked/drained ground turkey or cooked/drained ground beef.

My dog is lethargic, not eating, throwing up bile after cheese.

German Shepherd Dogs are prone to a variety of stomach and gut problems including exocrine pancreatitis, IBD, food allergies, plus , like every dog, can get gastro-intestinal infections. You can take her off food for about 12 hrs then feed her bland food such as boiled rice and boneless boiled chicken in small portions and divided over several small feeds /day. If she does not start to eat or cannot keep her food in , then you will need to take her to your vet for an exam and appropriate medications.
